482,285. Bottling liquids &c. HOLSTEIN & KAPPERT MASCHINENFABRIK PHONIX GES., and FEHRMANN, K. Sept. 23, 1936, No. 25842. [Class 125 (ii)] When filling bottles &c. with liquids such as beer, the bottles &c. are first scavenged with inert gas such as carbon dioxide, supplied from a measuring vessel such as a cylinder and piston 4, 8, Fig. 1, the gas so measured being delivered as through a pipe 13 to a point close to the bottom of the bottle. As an alternative, the measuring vessel may be arranged on the discharge side of the bottle, the necessary measurement being the volume of air displaced from the bottle. In the first modification, movement of the piston is effected by eccentrics or cams, or in the case of rotary bottling machines, by a groove 11 in which runs a roller 10 carried by the piston rod 9, the supply of gas to and from the cylinder being controlled by a plug cock 3 ; to enable the machine to be used with large or small bottles, the stroke of the piston can be varied by building up the groove of parts of appropriate curvature or by constructing the groove of parts pivoted together so that the inclination of the groove may be adjusted. The rate of delivery of gas to the bottle is arranged so as to prevent eddying therein; on the other hand, the cylinder 4 may be filled at a more rapid rate than its discharge ; by arranging that before the end of the discharge stroke of the piston the bottle is withdrawn, the entry of air through the open mouth of the bottle is prevented. During the operation of filling with liquid the bottle scavenged with inert gas, precautions have also to be taken to prevent the entry of air. For this purpose, the multiple-way cock 25, Fig. 4, of the filling head is provided with an additional passage 30 and communicating therewith an additional groove 26, the former at the moment the filled bottle is to be withdrawn being put in communication with a source 32 of inert gas, and the groove with the passages 27, 28, 29 of the filling head, so that no air can enter these parts and so lead to the contamination of the contents of the bottle next to be filled.
