Abstract
940,327. Unscrewing closures. GEORGE S. CLAYTON Ltd. June 25, 1962 [March 24, 1961], Not 10897/61. Heading B8T. A rotary head 10 has an opening 11 to receive a bottle top whereby the screw stopper or cap thereof is received by a chuck or gripper comprising resilient rollers 16 freely rotatable on pins 17 carried by devices 13 hinged to the head by pivot pins 14. The rollers are urged towards one another by springs 15, and on receiving the closure are urged outwardly and grip the closure tangentially whereby it is unscrewed. Upward movement of the bottle is limited by a plunger 18 with a shoulder which abuts a stop; when depressed by a tappet 25, the plunger ejects the unscrewed closure from between the rollers. Rotation of the bottle is prevented by a fork-shaped clamp. The head is carried by a sleeve 20 slidable axially of a tube 21 which is driven by a belt pulley 23, and a spring 24 urges the head downwardly. A number of such heads may be mounted on a rotary disc located above a series of bottle platforms associated with fork-shaped bottle clamps; the platforms or heads may be vertically reciprocated to bring the closures into engagement with the grippers.
