Abstract

726,527. Bottle-openers. STROBEL, J. MULLER-. March 31, 1954, No. 34744/53. Class 125(2). Relates to apparatus for removing from bottles 25, closure assemblies each comprising a resilient, headed stopper 26 and an outer cap 27 crimped around the flanged neck of the bottle. The assembly is first gripped at a level above that of the bottle neck by projections 29 on grippers 22 and then a part 34 of a plunger 14 bears strongly on the central portion of the top of the assembly to effect separation of the bottle therefrom. As shown, the grippers 22 are pivoted on the shoulders 21 of a casing 19 suspended from a head 10. They are urged to spread position by a garter spring 23 embracing them above their pivots. Plunger 14 is urged upwardly by a spring 15 and downwardly by a reciprocated member 11. During the first part of its downward motion, a cam surface 30 on plunger 14 forces the upper ends of the grippers apart to cause the projections 29 to grip the closure assembly at points determined by flanges 28 on the grippers engaging the top of the assembly. During further downward motion the grippers ride on cylindrical surface 33 of the plunger and the part 34 distorts the closure to effect the separation. As the member 11 rises, plunger 14 is retracted by spring 15 and the grippers 22 are spread by spring 23 until they reach their limiting position defined by surfaces 20, 32 on the casing 19 and plunger 14 respectively. In modifications, the grippers are spread apart by compression springs or leaf springs acting between the grippers and the casing 19.
