Abstract

494,194. Capping bottles and like containers. BARLOW, R., and STUCHBERRY, A. L. July 20, 1937, No. 20122. [Classes 125 (ii) and 125 (iii)] A closure cap 37 with a peripheral flange 38 or tongues is applied to a bottle 35 or other container having a shoulder 36 on the wall near its mouth, by means of an apparatus 11 with radially moving jaws 26 or dies which curl the flange inwardly about the shoulder by the operation of a lost-motion mechanism. A cylinder 16 can slide in a bore in the casting 11 and consists of two parts screwed together with a cylindrical chamber between them to contain the head 19 of a rod 20 which at its lower end carries the plunger 22 to engage the cap 37. The rod 20 passes through a member 23 able to slide in a cylindrical bore in the casting 11 and forced apart from the cylinder 16 by a spring 25. A conical recess in the member 23 leaves a rim with a sloping surface engaging sloping faces of jaws or curling dies 26 on rods 27 normally held outwards by springs 29. The bottle or other container with its cap is placed on a resilient table 3 clamped to the pillar 2 beneath the casting 11 which is also clamped. Depression of the pedal 8 causes the cylinder 16 to descend so that the rim of the member 23 forces the jaws 26 to move inwards against the action of the springs 29 to engage the flange 38 of the cap. Continued depression of the cylinder 16 takes up the lost motion connection between the head 19 and the end of its cylindrical chamber, and forces the plunger 22 on to the top of the cap against the action of the spring 25; this forces the cap and bottle downwards so that the shoulders 31 on the jaws 26 cause the edge of the flange 38 to curl inwardly round the curled shoulder 36 on the bottle. A circular tongue 37a and the part of the cap immediately round it are depressed below the plane of the top of the cap by the shape of the plunger 22. In a modification the curling jaws may be moved upwards to effect the curling operation, and the resilient table 3 may be lifted to its proper position after the bottle is placed on it, by a cam operated by the pedal 8. The method of securing closures may be applied to rectangular containers. Specification 494,219 is referred to.
