Abstract
532,595. Capping bottles. THORNTON, A. A. (Thermoplastic Bottle Sealing Corporation). Sept. 9, 1939, No. 25498. [Class 125 (ii)] A bottle closure consists of a disc D of thermoplastic material and a smaller disc D<SP>1</SP> of stiff fibrous material with a serrated circumference. The centre of the disc D and the disc D' are forced down on to a shoulder b<SP>1</SP> in the bottle neck, and the rest of the disc D expanded against the bottle neck and folded over the outside to form a skirt as shown in Fig. 30. A holder 52 for the small discs D' is arranged above a slideway 51 and a holder 43 for the large discs D beneath the slideway 51. A slide P, P' with two convex faces 60, 60' feeds one large disc and one small disc D, D' concentrically arranged to an electric heating chamber 54, whence they are fed by another slide P" into position above the bottle C and beneath the sealing head 91. The slide P" is operated directly by the hand lever 67 and the slide P, P<SP>1</SP> indirectly through a lever 66 with a spring end 64. At the end of the feeding stroke of the slide P, P' the end 64 is moved out of action and the slide is returned by springs not shown. An adhesive may be applied to the underside of the lowest disc in the holder 52 by a dabber connected at 29 to the lever 67. The sealing head 91 is depressed by a lever 94 and treadle 93. First the discs D, D' are forced down on to the shoulder b' in the bottle neck, then the flattening of the flexed spring plate 109 and the radially moving shoes 111 cause the material of the disc D to be expanded to contact with the interior of the bottle neck, and finally the outer edge of the disc D is rolled into a skirt down the outside of the bottle neck by rollers 115 carried on spring-pressed levers 116 mounted on the parts 98, 118 of the head 91 which still descends against the action of the spring 96' after the central part of the head has been arrested. The lowering of the head causes a delayed indicator bell I to ring after an interval long enough to allow the thermoplastic disc D to set. In the modification shown in Fig. 35 the disc D is expanded within the bottle neck by pivoted shoes 111e when they engage the top of the bottle.
