Abstract

1,032,581. Applying container closures. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 14, 1964 [Jan. 14, 1964], No. 1645/64. Heading B8T. A device for inwardly depressing the top of a cap 9 before pressing its skirt into a seal fit with the rim of a container 10, comprises a support 8 and a screw 7 which forces a rigid chassis 4 downwardly to urge a plunger 2 against the cap top. The plunger slides through an annular disc 1 bearing on the cap, and when spring means 5 between the disc and chassis are fully deformed as the chassis moves down, the cap skirt is forced on to the container by the disc. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), a chassis 23 has bell-cranks 21 pivoted thereto at 22, and each has a lug 24 engaging the undersurface of the cap skirt. The inner ends of the bell-cranks are pivoted on an annular member 25 urged upwardly against the chassis by spring-loaded pins 26. A plunger 28 is forced downwardly by a screw mechanism 29, to depress the cap top, and eventually this mechanism forces the annular member downwardly whereupon the lugs of the bell-cranks are released from the cap skirt which then engages the container rim.
