Apparatus for applying a capsule to a container 28 which has an external screw thread, by the deformation to the thread profile of the capsule flange by compression of a resilient ring 18 surrounding the cap flange is characterised in that the ring has a number of abutments 20 on its inner side which are spaced from one another when compressed so that outwardly projecting beadings which intersect the thread are formed on the cap flange. To obtain the closuring positions as shown in Fig. 2, the die 2, 3 is moved downwardly sliding over the rods 15, 15a to depress pins 5, 6 so that a conical ring 7 is depressed to bear against the conical sides of the segment ring 22 so that the abutments on the ring 18 are moved inwardly against the cap flange, thereby deforming it. The cap is held in position during the operation by a pressure plate 11 acted upon by spring 8. The ring may be formed from rubber or polystyrol and the compressing force may be exerted by a number of pivoted levers instead of the co-operating conical members. The thread of the container may be interrupted so that the cap flange, on deformation extends into the interruptions thereby forming a temper-proof cap.
