A stopper for permitting the introduction of gas under pressure into a container comprises (Fig. 1) a "crown-cork" " capsule 2 and a resilient packing disc 3 having apertures 4, 5 respectively which are not in alignment. On the application of external pressure, the packing is forced from the capsule to allow ingress of gas. A stopper for permitting the creation of a partial vacuum within a container comprises (Fig. 5) a flat rigid supporting disc 12 having an aperture 14, a resilient packing 3 having an aperture 5 and a " crown-cork " capsule 2 having an aperture 4 and a domed central part 11. On the reduction of external pressure, the packing is withdrawn from its supporting disc 12 and gas flows from the container through aperture 14 and aligned apertures 4, 5. For applying the above stoppers and simultaneously or subsequently creating the partial vacuum or excess pressure, the capsuling head 8 (Fig. 4) may be provided with a gas supply or withdrawal duct 9 terminating in a space 10 to allow passage of gas through aperture 4. For simultaneously effecting the capsuling and supply of gas or creation of vacuum, a container entering the capsuling head shown in Fig. 7 contacts and raises a central plunger 29 and so lifts a valve 41 off its seat to allow communication between the capsule of the container and a gas supply or withdrawal conduit 38. The valve 41 is returned by a spring 42 on removal of the container.
