Abstract

530,347. Bottle caps spotting. FARRER, J. O. (Continental Can Co., Inc.). June 21, 1939, No. 18141. [Class 125 (iii)] Spots are affixed to crown caps by means of a carrier element which carries them to and presses them against the caps; the element has a cylindrical, portion to which the spot is attached in centred relationship and which has a diameter such that it fits snugly within the cap to centre the spot therein. Operations are started by the lowering of the handle 262 to the position shown in Fig. 1 ; this movement lowers the burners 254, Figs. 1 and 15, into operative position, and the cam 268, operates the pin 269 which in turn causes the actuation of a switch to close the motor circuit to bring the machine into full operation. The rotor head 52, Figs. 4 and 11, is turned about its axis to present the carrier units 72 first to one station for the pneumatic attachment of a spot, then to the next where the adhesive on the exposed face of the spot is heated and rendered tacky; at the next the spot is attached to the crown cap and at the following stations pressure is applied by the element 219, Fig. 25, and the completed caps are then discharged on to the belt 239. When the rotor head is in position at a station the punch sleeves 165, Fig. 10, are moved forward from their normal position to cut spots from the foil web 175 which is fed from a supply reel 176 over a tightening pulley 181 and an idler pulley 179. After the spot 89 has been cut by the punch 165 the plunger inside the punch is moved forward to apply the spot to the end of the carrier unit on the rotor. Lost motion in the actuating mechanism permits the withdrawal of the plate 143 from the carrier unit as the plunger returns to its normal position, and ratchet mechanism feeds the web forward while the rotor moves a step forward. The web is fed angularly across the punching position so that spots from the web are staggered to prevent foil waste. The web is wound on a reel 177 after having been passed round a friction head 199 consisting of two rollers, one being spring pressed on the other. As each spot 89 arrives on the rotor unit at its vertical station, its exposed adhesive face is presented to the gas burner 254 which renders the adhesive tacky. It is then carried on and applied to the lowermost crown cap 87 supported in the shoot 228, Fig. 25 ; it adheres to the cap which is drawn past the pawl 229. At the spot forming station and the three following stations the valve sleeves 82 are in their extended positions, so that the ports 86 are uncovered, and the spots are held on to the rotor units by suction in the ducts 60, 76, 77. When a unit reaches the position shown on the right hand of Fig. 11, the valve sleeves 82 are depressed against the action of springs 83 by the presser sector 219; this closes the ports 86. In this position the presser is moved by the mechanism shown in Fig. 25 to impart spot affixing pressure to the assembled cap and spot unit, and the pressure is relieved by a slight outward movement of the presser prior to the next station. This outward movement of the presser permits the springs 83 to operate the sleeves 82 to uncover the ducts 86 and so direct an air blast against the applied spots 89 to press down any bulging parts, and also to overcome any tendency to stick to the carrier units. The completed caps are deposited on the conveyer belt 239 in staggered groups of twos and threes. The spots may be held to the carrier units mechanically instead of pneumatically. Specification 508,431 is referred to.
