Abstract
630,261. Applying closures to bottles. CHELLE, P. L. Nov. 20, 1946, No. 34412. Convention date, Jan. 17, 1946. [Class 125(ii)] In a machine for punching and shaping sealing caps from continuous metal strip, and delivering them to bottles or like containers fed by a conveyer associated with the machine as the containers pass in front of the machine, the machine being of the kind in which the passing of a container on the conveyer controls; through a linkage actuating a clutch on the machine drive shaft, the movements of the metal strip and a punching die, the caps after being punched and shaped by the die drop onto projections on a horizontal rotary plate which brings them into the path of movement of a rotary ejector. As shown, Fig. 1, a slide 59 carrying the punching die 58 is actuated by a rod 62 at the lower end of which is a frame member 63 reciprocated by a cam 15 and a return cam 66. Cams 15 and 66 are both fixed to a sleeve 7 which is freely rotatable on driving shaft 5, and is driven therefrom via a sleeve 8 having a ratchet flange 10, and a pawl 12 carried by cam 15. Flanges 6 connect shaft 5 with the driving shafts of a milk filling machine on one side and a sealing machine on the other. Absence of a bottle 4 from conveyer 2 allows lever 25, Fig. 2, to swing over, movement of a ramp surface 24 permitting a lever 20, keyed to shaft 19, to rise, thereby depressing a lever 18, Fig. 1, also keyed to shaft 19, which forces pawl 12 out of engagement with ratchet flange 10. The drive to sleeve 7 is thus interrupted, arresting the movement of die 58 and also of the metal strip feed rollers 32, 33 which are intermittently driven from sleeve 7 via a Maltese cross member 45. Aluminium strip 40 is drawn from a reel 29, and after punching, the scrap strip is wound on a reel 34 driven from roller 33 via a friction transmission disc. Before passing under die 58, the strip is given an annular coating of neutral oil on both faces, where the cap is to be cut, by two felt rings which are supplied with oil from a pump 72 and are brought into contact with the strip by movement of an arm 81 carried by slide 59. After a cap has been punched, shaped and released by die 58, it falls onto one projecting arm of a rotary member 88 driven from shaft 5 via shaft 89. Member 88 propels the formed cap through a passage which causes a projecting ear on the cap to be correctly angularly positioned after which it is passed by a rotary ejector 94 through a further passage 97 where it is sterilized by the flame from an alcohol burner, the flame being lowered to a pilot flame in the absence of a bottle by a linkage 106 operated by lever 20. The cap 100 is then delivered down a chute 98 to a distributer 99, where it is resiliently retained by two spring arms 114 until it is removed by a passing bottle 4, rubber scraping members 111, 112 serving to engage the cap correctly with the bottle mouth.
