LEWIS A. BA KEB, F ELGIN, ILLINOIS.
GAN-LINING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 29, 1916.
Application filed July 10, 1915. Serial No. 39,037.
-- To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEWIS A. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Elgin, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-Lining Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a novel machine for lining cans or containers with a water or acid proof lining, such as parchment paper, to prevent the contents of the can coming in contact with the walls of the can, and refers more particularly to a machine for automatically applying linings to the bottoms and side walls of such can or containers.
Among the objects of the invention is to provide a machine for this purpose by which the paper or like lining material may be rapidly and accurately applied to the can Walls without the necessity of hand work.
A further object of the invention is to .provide novel means for cutting from a strip or strips of sheet material sections of suitable size and shape to be applied to the cans and thereafter placing the lining sections into the cans.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel means for cutting strips from a sheet or web of paper to constitute a lining for the side walls of the can, winding the strip or strips around a suitable form or mandrel and forcing the mandrel with the strip thereon into the can, whereby the mandrel may be Withdrawn and leave the lining in place within the can. Other objects of the invention are to provide a simple mechanism by which the linings are automatically cut from strips or webs of sheet material and automatically inserting into the cans. I
The invention consists of the matter hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Heretofore it has been the practice to apply linings to cans by hand work and the operation of lining the cans has constituted a large expense in canning the products. By the use of my novel machine it is possible to line the cans as accurately as has heretofore been done by hand and to increase the speed of the work to such degree, compared to prior practice, as to greatly reduce the cost of the canned product. So far as the present invention is concerned the top lining may be applied to the can closure by hand before fitting the top to the can.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a plan view of a machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section on the line 3-3 of Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary inner face view of the Web feed, cutting and lining forming mechanism. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section taken on the line 55 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a transverse vertical section on the line 66 of Fig. 2. Figs. 7, 8 and 9 are transverse vertical sections on the lines 7-7, 88 and 99, respectively, of Fig. 4. Fig. 10 is a fragmentary detail view of the feed mechanism for the web from which the bottom linings are cut.
The frame of the machine .comprises a horizontal table 15 supported on standards 16. Said frame may be variously dey signed to support the various operative and driving parts of the machine and need, not be specifically described except in relation to parts hereinafter referred to which are associated therewith.
17 designates a transverse shaft which is mounted in bearings carried by and located beneath the table 15 and said shaft supports a drum 18 over which is trained an endless belt 19 by which the cans are carried to and away from the lining mechanism. Said belt, in practice, is trained over another drum, not shown, located a distance in rear of the machine whereby the cans after being lined are discharged from the machine.
The belt drum shaft 17 is driven by means of beveled gears 20, 21 and a shaft 22 arrangedlongitudinally beneath the table and near one side of the machine, through the medium of a sprocket chain which is trained over sprocket pulleys that are fixed to said shaft 22- and to a main driving shaft 26, respectively. The latter shaft is rotatively mounted in suitable bearings 27, 27 that are carried by and rise from aqolatform 30 which is supported above the table 15 through the medium of standards or columns 31 and vertical frame plates 82. The sprocket chain 23 is trained about a third sprocket wheel 33 that is mounted on a stub shaft at the rear end of the machine frame in a manner to serve as a chain or belt tightener. The shaft 26 is provided with tight and loose pulleys 36, 37, respectively, through which power is applied to drive the same.
In the operation of lining cans, according to the illustrated embodiment of my invention, the bottom lining consists of disks or sheets of material of the proper shape and are first applied to the bottoms of the cans, preferably after being cut from an endless web by an automatic cutting mechanism which forms part of the machine. Thereafter the can is shifted to a point in rear of the position at which the bottom lining is applied to receive the side wall lining. In the present instance the bottom and side linings are applied to the cans while resting upon the carrier or belt 19, suitable mechanism being employed to arrest each can during the lining operation. 4
The cans to be lined are placed, with their tops removed, on the belt or carrier 19 between guide bars 39, 39 arranged above the table 15 and are carried rearwa'rdly by said belt and guided by said bars into the influence of radial arms 40 of an intermittently actuated feed chain 41 which latter is trained about horizontal sprockets 42, 43 disposed above the level of the table 15.
Said sprockets are rotatively mounted on stub shafts 45, 44, which are supported on the table 15. Any suitable means may be applied for intermittently rotating the shaft 45 and the pulley 42 and thereby intermittently driving the feed chain 41, so as to intermittently feed the cans to the positions in which the linings are a'pplled thereto and to hold the cans while being lined. As herein shown the said shaft 45 is driven by a mechanism in the nature of a Geneva movement which is operated from the carrier driving shaft 22.
The mechanism herein shown comprises a vertical shaft 48 which extends upwardly through and has rotative bearing in the table 15 and is provided at its lower end with a beveled gear 49 that meshes with a beveled pinion 50 on the shaft 22. The shaft 48 carries at its upper end above the table 15 a disk 51 that is provided with a radial arm which "carries a stud 52 adapted Q to engage a series of peripheral notchesof a disk 54 that is fixed to theshaft 48 below the sprocket 42, the parts being arranged to operate in the ordinary manner of a Geneva movement to rotate the disk 54 and sprocket 42 step by step, each step movement carrying a can from the bottom lining to the side lining position of the can, as indicated in Fig. 1. The chain 41 is of such length that the cans are controlled to be intermittently moved and to be held at points where the bottom and side linings are applied; the subsequent intermittent movement carrying the can provided with a bottom. lining to the point where the side wall lining is received and carrying the full lined can in rear thereof past the lining mechanism, to cut the disk from said web and thereafter to force the disk into a subjacent can held by the intermittent feed mechanism. Said mechanism is made as follows. The web 56 isthreaded through a guide way formed in part between upper and lower web plates 58, 59, respectively, and across an opening 60 formed in a horizontal plate 61 that is supported on the frame members 32, the cans being fed between said members and arrested beneath said opening 60. The apertured plate 61 carries a ring 63 which supports an annular die 64 disposed concentrically to said opening. Said die is adapted to cotiperate with a circular disk cuttin knife 65 arranged thereabove to cut the dis s from theweb stretched across the opening 60. Said knife is carried by the lower end of a slide 66 that is guided and operated in a manner hereinafter to be described. After the said knife 65 has been depressed to sever the said bottom lining disk from the web, said lining is forced into the bottom of the can by means of a plunger 67 which is carried by the lower end of a plunger stem 68 that has bearing in a verti-- cal axial passage in the slide 66; said plunger having a stroke of such length as to carry the severed lining to the bottom of the subjacent can. The slide 66 has suitable bearing to, reciprocate vertically in a guide 71 which is carried by the platform 30. The
said guide is given vertical reciprocatory movement to actuate the cutting knife from the driving shaft 26 by a mechanism which is made as follows.
The guide 71 constitutes one of the bearings for the shaft 26. .Said shaft is provided its cutting position and is raised therefrom. a
The said guide 71 is cut away, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, to permit the required oscillatory movement of the link 76. The plunger 67 which places the bottom liningin the can is operated after the lining has been cut from the web and the cutter 65 retracted to depress the cut lining into the can by mechanism which is made as follows.-
78 designates a verticallyrocking L-shaped arm which is pivoted at 79 to the machine frame and is loosely connectedby a link 80 to the upper end of the plunger stem 68,
the upper end of the bearing in theslide 76.
being flared to permit the required oscillatory movement of the lower end of the link 80'. Said arm 78 carries adjacent to and below its pivot 79 a laterally directed bearing roller 81 which engages a closed cam groove 82 of a cam disk 83 that is fixed to a counter The shape of the groove 82 is such that while the bearing roller 81 is passing placed on the can. The means for relieving through the concentric portion thereof, or about two hundred seventy degrees of the arc of rotation of the cam disk, the plunger 67 is held in the position shown in Fig. 3, and that while passing through the straight or eccentric portion thereof said plunger is quickly depressed to force the bottom lining into the can.
The web 56 is intermittently fed to the knife 65 by means of a feed roller 90 which is driven from the shaft 84 through the medium of a sprocket chain 91. The web is intermittently pressed against the feed roller by a presser roller 93 which is mounted in a frame 94 that is pivoted at 95 to the machine frame and is under the influence of an expansion spring 96 which normally tends to hold the presser roller toward the feed roller. The said presse'r roller 93 is relieved from the feed roller during the interval when the lining section is being cut from the web and the presser roller consists, in the present instance, of a cam 98 which is carried by or rotates with the feed roller and is adapted to engage a projection 99 on the'presser roller frame so as to raise the same.
The side wall linings are cut from a web 100 of sheet material which is unwound from a reel 101 rotatively mounted in a suitable support at the rear end of the machine frame. The web is carried forwardly from the reel through a guide or way 104 that is formed by a vertical plate 102 at the front of the machine and upper and lower undercut bars 103, 103 carried thereby, the undercut bars engaging the edges of the web, as
best shown in Figs. 5, 7, 8 and 9. The webis directed to theguide by a roller 105 (Fig. 5) and is intermittently advanced through the guide to a mandrel 107 about which a cut length of the lining material sufficient to constitute a side lining is wound. The stem 108 of said mandrel extends upwardly through and rotates and slides endwise in a bearing bracket 109 fixed to the machine frame, as shown in Figs. 4 and 6. After the lining section has been cut from the weband wound upon the mandrel the mandrel is depressed into the can. The wound lining strip expands against the wall of the can and the mandrel is thereafter retracted without withdrawing the lining from the can.
Referring now to the means for feeding the web 100 to the lining forming mandrel 107, the same is herein shown as made as follows. 110, 111 designate feed rollers which are arranged at one side of the web guide 104 and which extend through openings'in the guide plate 102 for contact with the web. The said feed rollers cotiperate with presser rollers 112, 113 which are mounted in rocking frames 114, 115, respectively, that are pivoted to the machine frame in the manner shown in Figs. 4, 5, 7 and 8. The said presser rollers are adapted to be pressed toward the feed rollers by means of expansion springs 116, 117 which are arranged between fixed parts of the machine frame and lever arms 118, 119 of the roller carrying frames 114, 115. The feed rollers 110, 111 are preferably roughened to afford the required grip upon the paper web. The mandrel 107 is also provided with a friction surface, which may be formed by a rubber sleeve 120, to engage the web. The web is pressed against said mandrel by means of a presser roller 121 which is rotatively mounted in a rocln'ng frame 122 that is carried by arms 123 which extend outwardly from a shell 124 which surrounds the mandrel and within which the lining tube is formed. Said shell is herein shown as attached to and depending from the bracket 109. The roller bearing frame 122 is placed under the control of a spring 125 carried by the sleeve 124 and said spring serves to press the roller 121 toward the mandrel to grip the paper between said roller and mandrel; the shell being provided with an opening 126 through which the roller 121 extends for contact with the mandrel. I The shell 124 is also provided with a vertical slit 127 through which the web passes into the shell and into the bite between the mandrel and its presser roller and is provided at one side of said slit with a mandrel, is shown more clearly in Figs.
5, 7 and 8. Fig. 7 illustrates the mechanism for controlling the presser roller 113 associated with the feed roller 111, and Fig.
8 illustrates the mechanism for controlling the presser roller 112 associated with the feed roller 110. The said controlling mechanism comprises cams 135, 136 which 005perate with the upper ends of vertically swinging levers 137, 138, respectively, that are pivoted at 139to the machine frame.
The lower ends of said levers are provided.
with screw-threaded openings to receive contact screws 140 which are adapted to bear against the free ends of the lever arms 118 of the presser roller carrying frames so that when the upper ends of the arms are swung outwardly the lower ends thereof are swung inwardly and act on the arms .118, 119 to swing the presser roller carrying frames about their pivots to move the presser rollers awa from the feedrollers. The springs 116, 117 hold the presser rollers against their co6perating feed rollers when the lower ends of the levers 137, 138 are swung away from the arms 118, 119. The screw-threaded contact members 140 permit this mechanism to be adjusted relatively to said arms 118, 119 and they may be locked in adjusted positions by the lock nuts shown.
The mandrel 107 is adapted to be con-' tinuously rotated from the driving shaft 26 through the medium of a beveled gear 144 which meshes with a beveled pinion 145 which is fixed on the upper end of a stub shaft rotatively mounted in the machine frame. Said latter shaft carries a spur gear 146 which meshes with a spur pinion 147 that is carried by the upwardly extending shaft 108 of the mandrel 107, said shaft being also mounted to reciprocate vertically in the bearing bracket 109. The said pinion 147 is splined to the shaft 108 to permit the shaft to slide through the spur pinion and, at the same time, be rotated thereby. The said mandrel and its shaft are reciprocated at the proper time to deposit the formed lining into the can by a mechanism which is made as follows: 152 designates a vertically swinging lever which is forked at one end to engage over a block 153 that is carried by and fixed to the upper end.
of the stem 108. Said lever is pivoted to the frame at 154 and is providedat the end remote from the mandrel with a tail piece 155, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 and in full lines in Fig. 1. The tail piece is connected to a fixed part of the machine frame by a contractile spring 156 in such manner as to normally hold the mandrel above the path of the cans, as shown in Figs. 4 and 6. The said tail piece 155 is adapted to be engaged by a cam arm 158, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, which is fixed to the counter shaft 84 and is adapted once during each rotation of the said shaft to throw the tail piece 155 upwardly against the action of the spring 156 and to thereby depress the lining forming mandrel 107 into a subjacent can. When the cam arm leaves the tail piece 155 the spring 156 restores the parts to their normal positions.
By reference to Figs. 4, 5, 7 and 8, it will be noted that the presser roller 113 which coiiperates with the feed roller 111 is pressed against its feed roller by its spring 117 throughout the principal portion of the rotation of its controlling cam 136, said lever bearing against the lower face of the cam 136, and it is relieved from its companion feed roller when the end of the lever 138 passes over the higher or raised portion 136 of said pam. The presser roller 112 is held out of contact with its companion roller 110 throughout the greater portion of the rotation of the controlling cam- 135 and while the lever 137 is traveling against the raised portion of said cam, and is pressed into feed contact with said roller by the spring 116 when the lever 137 drops into the relatively short lower portion or notch 135* of the latter cam.
The web is severed to produce a lining section at a time when both feed rollers and the mandrel are inactive to feed or advance the web by means of a cutting device consisting of a fixed shearing blade 158 between the feed rollers and carried by the guide plate 102 (Fig. 5) and a swinging blade 159 which is carried by the lower end of the vertically swinging blade actuating lever' 160 that is pivoted at 161 to the machine frame. The upper end of the said lever carries a bearing roller 162 which travels in a cam groove 163 of a cam disk 164 that is fixed to and rotates with the main driving shaft 26. The cam groove is formed with a relatively short sharp cam extension 165 which acts, when the roller 162 is passing therethrough, to swing the movable blade 159 into co6perative shearing engagement with the fixed blade 158 and to thereby sever the web or strip. The said movable blade is adjustably mounted on the blade actuating lever 160 to adjust it to the fixed blade. As herein shown such adjustment is efiected by slotting the movable blade and fixing it to the lever by means of screws 167 which extend, through said slotsv and into the lever, and engaging the back of the blade by adjusting screws 168 which are screw-threaded to a flanged portion of the blade carrying lever 160. The screws 167 fixedly lock the blade in positions to which it is adjusted by the tion of its controlling cam 136, through they action of the sprlng 117, and when the lever 138 is riding on the lower portion of the cam 136. The presser roller 112 is in operative feed relation with its companion feed roller 110 through a short part of the rotation of its controlling cam 135, or during the time the lever 137 is traveling over the depressed portion 135* of the said cam. Said presser roller 113 and feed roller 111 feed the web through the guide 104 and between the separated feed and presser rollers 110 and 112, respectively. After the advance end of the web has passed the said latter rollers the presser roller 113 is released from its comp'anionfeed roller, the arm 138 traveling over the raised portion 136 of the cam 136 to effect such release. Immediately upon the release of the presser roller 113 and before the web is gripped between the feed roller 110 and its presser --roller, the blade actuating lever 160 is actuated by its cam 164 to sever the web to produce a lining section. After the lining section has been thus severed the upper end of the lever 137 drops into the depressed peripheral portion 135 of its cam 135 and the spring 116 forces the presser roller 112 toward the feed roller 110 so as to feed the lining section to the bite between the mandrel 107 and its presser roller 121. Thereafter the presser roller 112 is released from the said roller 110 and the lining section is spirally wound on the mandrel by rotation of the latter. After the presser roller 112 is thus released the presser roller 113 is again brought into cooperative feeding relation with its companion feed roller 111 to feed the web past the cutting knife and between the feed roller 110 and its presser roller 112 whereupon the operation of cutting the lining section from the advance end of the web and feeding the lining section to the mandrel is repeated. When the lining section has been completely wound upon the mandrel, the mandrel is depressed through the action of the controlling cam arm 158 to deposit the lining within the can,,the lining expanding against the can wall and freeing itself from the mandrel. After the said cam arm 158 leaves the tail piece 155 of the mandrel depressing lever 152 the spring 156 restores the mandrel to its upper position as shown in Fig. 6. During the lowering and raising movements of the mandrel the roller 110 and its presser roller are inactive to feed the web. However, during the raising movement of the mandrel the feed roller 111 and its presser roller 113 may become active to feed the web. toward the mandrel and the cutting blade may be operative to sever another lining section therefrom; it only being necessary that the mandrel be fully raised or reit will be obvious that the speed of the machine is only limited by the time required to roll a lining section on the mandrel and depress the mandrel and lining into the can.
Fig. 5 of the drawings that the fixed blade of the web shearing device is mounted on the side of the shearing space in the guide adjacent to the primary feed roller 111 so that the cut end edge of the Web is not distorted by the shearing blade. Thereby the web will readily bridge said space and find its way into the open end of the guide adjacent thereto. The mandrel, when depressed into the can, serves to force the bottom lining entirely to the bottom wall thereof if it has not been so deposited by the plunger 67 and whenthe formed lining leaves the shell 124 it is free to expand outwardly against the side Walls of the can and is thereby freed from the mandrel so that there is no tendency of the mandrel to withdraw the lining when it rises from the can. If found desirable, the mandrel presser roller 121 may be relieved from the mandrel during the reciprocation of the latter by a controlling cam on the shaft 26 in the same general manner as the feed presser rollers 112, 113 are relieved.
It is thought that the operation of the machine has thus far been clearly indicated and that a specific recapitulation thereof is not necessary. Briefly it will be understood that as the cans are fed intermittently through the machine, the bottom wall linings are cut from the web 56 and are forced into the'can and that thereafter the cans are advanced beneath thelining forming mandrel 107 and are there arrested until the lining which has been formed about the mandrel is placed in the can by the depression of the mandrel and that the cans are discharged from and delivered to the machine by the continually moving belt 19.
It will be understood that the structural details of the embodiment of my invention herein shown may be considerably varied within the spirit and scope of the invention, and that it is the intentto claim all of inherent novelty described in the specification and shown in the drawings.
