Abstract

392,270. Feeding end caps for cartons. LEADLEY, J. W., 13, Punstock Road, Darwen, Lancashire. Dec. 30, 1931, Nos. 35943/31 and 3542/32. [Class 117.] Caps C for placing on the ends of cartons are stacked in a shoot 10, Figs. 1 and 3, above an opening in a plate 9 carrying an interrupted flange member 9<2> which supports a cap by its flange when the cap is allowed to drop thereon by the actuation of radially slidable fingers 13 disposed above the flange, the fingers being reciprocated alternately in pairs so that when one pair is retracted to release the lowest cap the other pair is advanced to support the stack. A drum 5 rotates on a horizontal axis below the shoot and plungers 6 are disposed in sleeves therein and caused by springs to lie within openings in a resilient covering 7 on the periphery of the drum until a plunger approaches the shoot 10 when it is projected by a cam 8 and, entering between the sides of the member 9<2>, engages the dished portion of the cap supported thereon and sweeps it off the flange ; the plunger heads and, if necessary, the ends of the sleeves are magnetized to retain the metal cap, but if non-metallic caps are being applied to the cartons the ends of the sleeves 61 are shaped to engage the caps and the plungers, as the sleeves take the caps from the member 92, are withdrawn in the sleeves to create a partial vacuum between the cap and the end of the plunger and so retain the former on the sleeve. The cap is carried around by the drum to the carton being positioned thereunder and enters the open end thereof, and, as the drum and carton travel together, the cap fully engages the end of the carton, the plunger is retracted to release the cap and enlargements 9<3> on the drum covering press it into position. The cap in the shoot 10 may be supported and released one by one by a pair of horizontal rotating discs disposed at diametrically opposite sides of the shoot and provided with gaps. and raised cam portions adjacent thereto which as the discs rotate, ride above the flange of the lowest cap and engage beneath the flange of the next lowest to support the stack.
