Abstract

1361397 Pressure resisting closures GENERAL DESCALING CO Ltd 13 March 1972 [11 Dec 1970] 58974/71 Heading F2P A tank cover-plate 3 is held in a neck 2 by peripherally spaced balls 4 in a cage 5 abutting inclined seating surfaces 10, 11 of the coverplate and neck respectively, whereby movement of the cage causes the balls to move to release the cover-plate. The cage 5 is moved upwardly so that the balls 4 traverse the inclined surfaces 10, 11 to enter a recess 12 in the cover-plate, the cage also pushing upwardly a horizontal part of an L-section seal 13, held in the cover-plate and sealing against the neck 2, to relieve pressure in the tank. The cage 5 has axially elongated slots so that the seal 13 is pushed upwardly before the balls are moved. The cover-plate 3 may be removable, hinged or pivoted about a vertical shaft. In one embodiment the cover-plate 3 is supported by two diametrically opposed pins, one pin 21 shorter than the other pin 20, which is upwardly biased by a spring 23, so that upon release, the cover-plate moves until the shorter pin 21 clears its corresponding socket 22 in the neck, thus allowing the cover-plate to be pivoted about pin 20. In another embodiment, Fig. 7, the ball cage is actuated by diametrically opposed cams 41 on the ends of arms 42, 42<SP>1</SP> connected by a central strut 43. With the coverplate in the closed position, the arms 42, 42<SP>1</SP> and strut 43 lie in a horizontal plane, and the raising of the members 42, 42<SP>1</SP>, 43 to the position as shown rotates the cams 41 to release the cover-plate. A stepped rod 46, 46<SP>1</SP>, 60 is also rotated from a horizontal to a vertical position, and movement of a lever 44 depresses the rod into a recess 54 and then lifts the cover-plate by means of the arms 42, 42<SP>1</SP> to subsequently pivot about the rod. Alternatively, the cams 41 may be manually operated. The cover-plate may comprise an annular flange with a plate forming the cover, and having a separate sealing plate supported therefrom, the chamber between the cover and the sealing plate being pressurized.
