1283795 Stud and socket fastenings RUBERY OWEN & CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [14 March 1970] 12389/70 Heading E2B Releasable means for securing a freight container to the platform of a trailer or the like comprises a spindle 7 and head 6 which are supported in a projected position by two cooperating superimposed abutment members through which the spindle passes, the upper abutment member 10 is of inverted U shape and is guided in a housing for vertical sliding movement therein with the spindle and head, and the lower abutment member 13 is of U shape is angularly movable in the housing between a position in which the limbs of the two members are in vertical alignment and abut and a position in which the limbs are out of alignment and the members can rest together in a vertical direction to allow the head to be retracted into the housing. A sleeve 8 secured to the spindle provides an abutment for supporting the member 10 for axial movement with the spindle. The lower member 13 has a spigot 15 which engages in a hole in a plate 4 of a housing and is retained against axial movement by a spring ring 16. A collar 17 is rotatably mounted on the spindle 7 and has a downwardly projecting peg 19 movable in a notch 20 in a flange 18 at the lower end of the spindle and an upwardly extending peg 21 engageable in any selected one of a number of notches 22 in the lower end of the spigot 15. The collar has an operating handle 23. In operation the spindle 7 is moved upwardly to raise the head 6 above the plate 1 and to raise the member 10 above the member 13, the peg 21 then engages a notch 22 of the spigot. The collar 17 is then turned through 90‹ rotating with it the member 13 so that limbs of members 10 and 13 abut, and the head is pivoted through an elongated opening in a container corner casting. The collar is turned through a further 90‹ thereby rotating the spindle and head into the fastening position, the lower abutment limbs being turned out of alignment with the limbs of member 10. The limbs can be realigned by turning the collar back through 90‹. To release the container the collar is turned back through a further 90‹.
