Abstract

1,097,958. Case fastenings. LONG MANUFACTURING CO. Inc. Sept. 21, 1965 [Jan. 21, 1965], No. 40281/65. Heading E2A. A fastening device adapted to be mounted on separable parts of a container adjacent a line of separation therebetween comprises a keeper 13 adapted to be fixed to one of the separable parts and a unit adapted to be mounted on the other of said separable parts and including a housing member 16 defining a well 19 of substantially circular segment configuration, a movable fastening member of substantially corresponding configuration to said well, means 31 supporting said fastening member so as to permit circumferential displacement of the fastening member relative to the well, from a normal fastening position in which the member is nested in registering relation in said well, to a releasing position displaced circumferentially from said fastening position in one direction, said housing and fastening members having keeper receiving apertures 37, 32 therein adapted to receive a portion 35 of said keeper when said separable container parts are in a closed position, and said fastening member aperture including means 34 for fastening the keeper portion therein against withdrawal therefrom and for freeing the keeper portion for withdrawal when said fastening member occupies said fastening and releasing positions respectively. In the construction shown the aperture 32 has two portions a relatively wide portion 33 and a relatively narrow portion which forms the means 34 and when the fastening member is in the releasing position the keeper portion 35 can enter the portion 33 subsequent to movement of the fastening member to fastening position bringing the keeper portion 35 into the narrower portion 34; the keeper portion 35 is grooved so that when it is in the narrower portion 34 it cannot be withdrawn. The fastening member is located in its releasing and fastening positions by a spring loaded ball which is engageable with either of a pair of detents 41 or 41' and its movement in the releasing direction is limited by a post 48 which protrudes from the surface of the well. A key operated bolt 45 is provided which in the fastening position of the fastening member is slidable by means of the key to overlie the post 48 and so prevent release of the keeper. A housing in which the bolt slides has a spring like extension 46a which in the unlocking position of the 'bolt engages a notch in the bolt and in the locking position of the bolt engages behind the end of the bolt to restrain movement of the bolt.
