Abstract

1,154,426. Combination padlocks. COATS & CLARK Inc. 5 April, 1967 [13 Dec., 1966], No. 15524/67. Heading E2A. A combination lock has a two-part casing in which is mounted a shaft 16 carrying numbered wheels 24 which have internal grooves 30 for cooperation with projections 31 on the shaft when the latter is moved axially, and within each wheel 24 is frictionally mounted a split ring 29 the break in which provides a passage for the corresponding projection 31 when the wheel is properly set. As shown, the lock is incorporated in a padlock and the shaft 16 is part of the shackle 17. When, after the wheels 24 have been correctly set, the shackle 17 has been moved against a spring 20 to open the padlock, a slide 36 can be manually depressed, by means of fingerpieces (not shown), to permit a further movement of the shackle to a position in which the keys 31, whilst still engaged with the split rings 29, are disengaged from the grooves 30. The wheels 24 may then be adjusted relative to the split rings 29 so as to change the combination. Springs 33 frictionally engage the wheels 24. One part of the casing has rivet like projections 11 by which it is secured to the other part.
