In a combination lock having a shaft 16 carrying numbered wheels 24 which when properly set allow the passage of projections 31 on the shaft when the latter is moved axially, such movement is normally limited by the end 37 of a slide 36 but by inserting a key 51, a control member 40, 45 may be moved to the left (as seen in Fig. 1) to allow downward movement of the slide 36 and further outward movement of the shaft 16 so that the wheels may be rotated and set to a new combination. The wheels have internal grooves 30 for cooperation with the projections 31, and frictionally mounted within each wheel is a split ring 29, the break in which provides the passage for the corresponding projection 31 when the wheel is properly set. When the shaft 16 is moved to its extreme leftward position, the projections 31 remain engaged with the split rings 29 but are disengaged from the grooves 30 so that the wheels 24 can be moved, for re-setting purposes, relatively to the split rings 29. Springs 33 frictionally engage the wheels 24. As shown, the lock is incorporated in a padlock, the shaft 16 being part of the shackle 17. The components which may be of plastics are mounted in a two-part casing, one part of which has rivet-like projections 11 by which it is secured to the other part.
