Abstract
1,187,538. Combination locks. PRESTO LOCK CO. Inc. 25 Sept., 1968 [26 Oct., 1967], No. 45518/68. Heading E2A. In a combination lock on a luggage case, rotation of the tumblers 20 is prevented when the bolt is in its fastening position and a spring detent is provided for holding the bolt in its releasing position, so that the case cannot easily be locked with an unknown combination. The tumblers are in the form of cylinders which are rotatable on a fixed shaft J under the influence of dials 22, these being indexed by springs H. These cylinders have collers 32 at one end having flats 34 which allow the passage of bars 76 of the bolt when they are in the uppermost position shown in Fig. 7. The dials are carried loosely on their respective cylinders but are indexed on them by projections 36 engaging one or other of ten slots 38, each one corresponding to a number. The bolt D is manually moved by a puller button 46 through lost motion 50 and engages a notched keeper B. To set the combination, the tumbler cylinders are pressed along the shaft J against spring F by means of a pusher 96 projecting under the casing. This releases the detents 36 from their slots 38 in the dials to allow resetting. This disengagement may only take place when the tumblers are in the 'open combination' shown in Fig. 7 which also frees the bolt for movement by the puller, this being releasably held in position by spring 102 under the puller head. When the bolt D is in its releasing position, the bars 76 prevent rotation of the tumblers, so that the dials are held in their 'open combination' positions, and the combination cannot be inadvertently lost and the case shut. To set the combination, the case must be opened and the combination deliberately reset by pusher 96 before closing the case. If the combination is lost, and the case open, the setting of each tumbler may be returned to 'open' by observing a mark 110 through a hole 112. The bolt D is preferably a dead bolt, but it may be spring biased to the releasing position instead of to the fastened position as in latches.
