A closure head for closing lids on jars having external screw-threads or annular beads comprises a pressure disc 6 resiliently connected to a pressure head 2 and pressure jaws 7, actuated by finger springs 11, which deform the lid 12 to correspond with a thread or bead 8a on the jar neck 8. In operation, the pressure disc 6, having a recess into which the lid 12 fits, is moved downwardly so that a knurled edge 6f presses a knurled pattern into the lid 12 and the finger springs 11 slide down the web of the jaws 7 to press the jaws against the pressure disc 6 and the end 76 of the jaw againt the lid 12. If the pressure jaw 7 impinges a screw-thread 8a, the jaw is able to slide upwardly by means of a plate spring 10 which yields. The plate spring 10 presses down on the top part 7a of the pressure jaws, when the finger springs 11 are withdrawn, to keep the jaws in a spread position, as shown on the right of Fig. 1. In other embodiments, a pressure spring 13, Fig. 3, (not shown) let into a bore 6d, retains the jaws 7 in the spread position and a plate spring 10<SP>1</SP> lies between the part 7a of the jaw 7 and the pressuredisc. An extension, beyond the part 7a of the jaw 7 is provided in Fig. 4 (not shown) for keeping the jaw 7 in the spread position. The pressure disc may have circumferentially spaced slots for holding the pressure jaws 7 and finger springs 11 from being laterally displaced.
