Abstract

376,067. Capping bottles &c. LANDAU, R., 202, Kaiserallee, Berlin. Aug. 24, 1931, No. 23768. [Class 125 (ii).] In a machine for applying crown corks and like caps to bottles &c. adjustable and uniformly acting forces operate on the head of the cap and drive the cap rim over the bottle mouth bead, after which horizontal or obliquely acting forces having downwardly-moving points of application press upon the cap rim in the direction of its longitudinal generatrices, thus making a permanently gastight compression of the packing gasket in the head of the cap and bending inwards the marginal portion of the cap. As shown, to the lower end of a capping head 1 mounted on a vertically reciprocated rod 3 is screwed a cupped nut 9, which presses the shoulder 21 of a guide sleeve 7 against a collar 10 on the head 1. On a hollow screw-threaded ram 11 passing through a bore in the top of the guide sleeve 7 and terminating in or provided with a permanent-magnet or electromagnetic die 12, is adjustably mounted a slide 14 working within the guide 7 and having conical resilient tongues 15. In operation a cap is allowed to adhere to the die and the head 1 is lowered on to the bottle. The cap is pressed tightly thereon, the slide 14 moving upwards relatively to the guide 7 against the spring 19. The sharp edge of the shoulder 21 presses on the tongues 15 and buckles them so that their pressure faces 16 press obliquely against and draw downwards the skirt of the cap, making a gastight joint. A ring 18 accentuates the buckling action. A resiliently-mounted rod 22, for ejecting unsuitable caps, rides in the hollow ram 11. For capping comparatively large receptacles such as jam jars the slide 14 and nut 9 may be replaced by larger sizes, and a suitable die attached to the ram. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the resilient tongues are radially adjustable. The tongues 115 are carried on plates 120 sliding in radial slots 121 of a non-rotatable disc 122 which is vertically adjustable on the ram 111. Bolts 123 on the plates 120 engage in spirallycurved slots 124 in a rotatably-mounted disc 125, which has downwardly-extending arc-shaped combs 129, the lower surfaces 130 of which are oblique. The tongues 115 are enclosed by a sleeve 126 which is guided by means of a flange 127 along the inner surface of the sleeve 107. When the disc 125 is rotated in a clockwise direction the plates 120 and hence the tongues 115 are moved inwards, and the combs 129, which initially project into arc-shaped slots 132 on the flange 127 of the sleeve 126, are also rotated relatively to the sleeve 126, so that the sleeve rides down the oblique surfaces 130. The lower edge of the sleeve 126 then forms the sharp buckling edge, corresponding to the shoulder 21, Fig. 1.
