Abstract

255,632. Sutcliffe, T. July 10, 1925. Capsules and the like, applying. - In a bottle &c. sealing machine, a metal spiral wire annulus 21, Fig. 7, is adapted to have its effective diameter decreased to compress the depending rim of the closure cap around and under the flange of the bottle. The annulus is supported between the annular end of the head 22 of the capper and a conical surface 20 on a ring 19 secured to links 17 by which it is raised relatively to the head 22 to compress the annulus 21. The links 17 are connected at their upper ends by spring means to a spring-pressed lever 14 which is operated by a pedal through a rod 28, the spring means preventing undue force being used to draw together the head 22 of the capper and the ring 19. As the diameter of the annulus 21 decreases., the annulus rolls down the conical surface 20 and rolls the flange of the cap beneath the bottle flange. The annulus may be adapted to be expanded to form an out-turned flange and may be applied to any cylinder of thin metal &c. The device is especially suitable for applying a sealing-strip 6, Fig. 8, having its lower part weakened by a groove 25.
