Description
June-3, 1941." w. w. Kma- OPENER FOR CROWN SEQLED CONTAINERS Filed NOV. 1, 1939 Inventor kV/VZ/ WW 44 A iiomeys I am Patented June 3, 1941 UNITED STATES PATENT GFFICE OPENER FOR CROWN SEALED CONTAINERS William W. King, Lancaster, Pa.
Application November 1, 1939, Serial No. 302,426
Claims.
The present invention relates to bottle openers for removing so-called crown caps from bottles, cans and other containers and has for its primary object to provide a ring member mounted on the neck of the container immediately beneath the edge of the cap and supported on an inclined track, the ring member being provided with an upstanding cam member adapted for riding under the edge of the cap to force the same upwardly upon the rotation of the opener.
A further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efficient in performance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the neck of a bottle showing the remover in position thereon.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view therethrough.
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on a line 33 of Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the opener.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the numeral 5 designates the neck of a bottle adapted to receive the usual crown cap 6. A bead 1 surrounds the neck of the bottle immediately beneath the lower edge of the cap 6, the bead being inclined from a horizontal position and constitutes a track on which a ring member 8 is rotatably supported.
Rising from the upper surface of the ring member at one side thereof is a cam member 9 and projecting radially from one edge of the ring member, preferably at a point adjacent the cam member, is a thumb tab it.
In the operation of the device the ring member 8 is positioned on the track 1 before the cap 6 is sealed thereon, and in order to remove the cap the thumb tab [0 is pressed by the thumb of a person thereby causing the cam member 9 to ride under the lower edge of the cap and force the same upwardly from the neck of the bottle.
While the invention is illustrated upon a bottle neck it will be understood the same is equally well adapted for use upon other types of containers equipped with a crown cap.
It is believed the details of construction and advantages of the device will be readily under-- stood from the foregoing without further detailed explanation.
Having thus described the invention what I claim is:
1. An opener for caps of crown sealed containers comprising an inclined track formed on the neck of the container beneath the cap, a ring member rotatably supported on said track and an upstanding projection on said ring member engageable with a limited portion of the edge of the cap for forcing the cap upwardly upon the rotation of said ring member in either direction.
2. An opener for containers comprising an inclined track formed on the neck of the container, said container being adapted to receive a crown cap immediately above the track, a ring member rotatably mounted on said track, a projection rising from the ring at one side thereof and engageable with a limited portion of the cap under the lower edge thereof upon the rotation of said ring member in either direction and a thumb tab projecting radially from said ring member.
3. An opener for containers comprising an inclined track formed on the neck of the container, said container being adapted to receive a crown cap immediately above the track, a ring member rotatably mounted on said track, a projection rising from the ring at one side thereof and engageable with a limited portion of the cap under the lower edge thereof upon the rotation of said ring member in either direction and a thumb tab projecting radially from said ring member and positioned adjacent the projection.
4. A bottle cap opener comprising a continuously formed inclined flange on the neck of the bottle spaced below the lower edge of the cap, a ring member rotatably mounted on the flange and an upstanding projection on said ring member engageable with a limited portion of the edge of the cap for forcing the cap upwardly upon the rotation of said ring member in either direction.
5. An opener for caps of crown sealed containers comprising an inclined track formed on the neck of the container beneath the cap, a ring member rotatably supported on said track and an upstanding projection on said ring member engageable with a limited portion of the edge of the cap for forcing the cap upwardly upon the rotation of said ring member in either direction, said projection having its upper end adapted to engage spaced portions of the cap upon a movement of the ring member in opposite directions to loosen such portions of the cap from the neck of the container.
WILLIAM W. KING.
