BOTTLE-CLOSURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 1, 1921.
Application filed September 23, 1919. Serial No. 325,737.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I CARL J. SCHUSTER a citizen of the United tates, residing at Milwaukee,in the county of Milwaukee, State of Visconsin, have invented a new and useful Bottle-Closure; andI do hereby declare. the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which-it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in closures or caps for bottles and jars, and has particular reference to a device of this character which provides a tight seal for relatively wide mouthed receptacles by a simple telescopic engagfiment of the cap onto the bottle or jar mout Frequently the contents of a container become spoiled by reason of the failure of the cover being properl placed thereon in an air-tight manner. his is especially true of containers provided with a screw threaded cover or cap which as a rule is not screwed down sufliciently when placed on the mouth of a bottle to make'the necessary seal, or
when the threads of the cap jam and get stuck even at the very beginning of first turn while trying to screw cap on. Accordingly, the present invention has view the provision of a novel sealing cap which may be securely fastened to the mouth of a bottle in a quick and expeditious manner, and at the same time provide an effective seal.
A further object of the invention is to construct a cap which provides an augmented seal by reason of parts of the cap engaging both the interior and exterior of the mouth of the bottle or vessel.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claim.
. For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in: 'wh1ch:--.-
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the mouth provided with an annular keeper groove for cooperating with the holding ribs of the cap.
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view'of the cap carrying an interior sealing disk which is adapted to engage with the inner surface of tlhe bottle mouth to provide an augmented sea Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view showing a modification which combines the features of Figs. 3 and 4.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
In carrying the present invention into effect it is proposed to employ a cap 1 which may be made of metal or fiber and essentially comprises a body portion 2 and a depending annular fiange portion 3 for tele-175 of clutching means in the depending flange'85 portion 3 of the cap. Thus it will be observed from the drawings that it is pro posed to provide the said flange with a plurality of inwardly projecting ribs 6 adapted to engage directly with the exterior'of the bottle or jar mouth, and which by reason of the inherent resiliency of the flange and the constricted diameter thereof produced by the inwardly projecting ribs will'e-xert a superior gripping or clutching effect on the mouth of the bottle to tightly position the cap in place but at the same timepermit its ready removal by; a simple combined rotary and longitudinal movement. As will be observed from the drawings the ribs 6 are vertically arranged 'in the flange 3 and may be spaced at any desired or required distance to obtain the desired holding efl'ect, and terminate Short of the top and bottom of the flange.
As shown in Fig. 3 of-the drawings, the vertical holding ribs 6 may cooperate with a suitable annular groove 7 or its equivalent formed in the peripheral surface of the bottle mouth 4. When the cap 1 is telescopically applied to a bottle mouth provided with the groove 7 the ribs 6 will snap into the same and thus eifectively prevent accidental displacement of the cap from the bottle mouth, but at the same time will permit of its facile removal by the slightly circular and upwardly liftin movement heretofore referred to. That 18130 say, that a1 though the ribs 6 may be seated in the groove 7 the same may be readily removed there-' which is provided with a depending retain-- ing flange 10 adapted to engage with the interior of the bottle mouth. This form of the invention provides an augmented and air-tight seal, and the metallic cap acts as a carrier for the sealing disk 9. By'reason of the novel manner of assembly the interior sealing disk and cap may be conveniently fitted to the bottle or jar mouth by a simple telescopic move ent, and the combined effect of this arra gement is to provide a positive interior r-tight seal and an exterior clutching mea s for securely holding the entire cap assembly in place.
bination with the cap structure shown by Fig. 5 illustrates a slight modificationin which the sealing disk 9 is used in com- Fig. 3, the crimped disk 9 of Fig. 4 being ubstituted for the plain sealing disk 5 of Fig. 3; The annular head portion 8 not only provides a recess to receive the sealing disk; but also provides a finger piece which enables the closure to be conveniently grasped whenplacing it in position or removing it therefrom.
Without further description it is thought that the features and advantages of the present invention will be readily apparent,
and it will of course. be understood that changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is
A sealing'cap comprising a sheet metal body formed with a depending resilient clutching flange adapted to slip upon the neckof a container with a telescoping action, an annular crimpedportion being pro-. vided 'at the base of the clutching flange which forms an exterior finger piece and an interior pocket; and an interior sealing disk arranged within the body and having edge portions thereof received Within an interior pocket to hold the sealing disk in position, said sealing disk being formed with a depending annular flange which is adapted to enter the 'neck of the container and-expand peripherally into a close engagement therewith.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence" of two subscribing witnesses.
' CARL J. SCHUSTER.
