' UNITED STATES ALBERT ADELSON, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA. I
cnosunn.
Application filed February 3, 1926. Serial No. 85,782.
This invention relates to improvements in closures.
The principal ob ect of this invention is to provide a closure means for bottles, jars, tumflange upon the bottle or jar thereby holding the seaming element within the cap in intimate contact with the top of the bottle.
A still further object is to produce a device of this character which is cheap in construction and, therefore, well within t-hecusternary market price of closures of this. nature.-
Other objects and advantages will be apparent'during the course of the following description. 1
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure I is a fragmentary side elevation of the top of a jar constructed in accordance with my invention,
Figure II is a vertical cross section of a bottle showing one of my caps applied thereto,
Figure III is a vertical cross section of a cap as shown in Figure IV and adapted to be employed with the jar shown in Figure I,
Figure IV is a side elevation of the jar constructed in accordance with my invention,
Figure V is a top plan view of the neck of a bottle or jar, with the depressions shown in dotted lines, and
Figure'VI is a fragmentary side elevation of a jar with the closure thereon.
In the capping of'bottles and jars, it is now customary to employ a closure having an manner that it will spring over a flange formed upon the bottle or jar and tightly engage the same.
I further provide means to prevent rotation of this cap, except when desired, and further provide means whereby the capmay be bodily removed without mutilation.
In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a jar having a neck portion 6 terminating at 7. This neck portion is provided with a flange as shown at 8.
By referring to Figure V, it will be noted that this flange 8 is provided with a series ofnotches 9 and upon the under surface of the flange are provided depressions 11. These 'depressions'serve to prevent accidental roa depending annular flange 17 which flange is slit as at 18 so as to permit the same to be flexed when being pressed over the flange of the bottle or jar.
At 19 I have shown a plurality of lugs formed upon the flange l7 and so shaped as to form a cam surface 21 adapted to contact the bottle flange so as to spread the annular flangeduring the capping process.
At 22 I have shown a seal which may be made of cork, rubber or any similar sealing material. In the form shown in Figure II, it 'will be noted that the depressed portion 16 is provided with inclined side walls and the cap a is further depressed in depending rounded formation as at 23 so as to form astopper extending into the neck of the bottle 12.
In employing my device, it is only necessary to place the same over the top of the bottle or jar and to force the same downward- 1y thereon. This downward pressure causes the cam surfaces 21 to engage the flange 8 thus spreading the closure and after passing over the flange 8 these lugs 19 engage the under surface of the flange andretain the cap in intimate contact with the top of the bottle or jar.
When it is desired to remove the closurefrom the bottle or jar, a partial revolution of the same will bring the lugs l9 into line a simple device and one which will performall of the objects above set forth.
It is to he understood that the formof my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
While I have shown my invention applied to a bottle and jar, it will be obvious that it can also be used to advantag on any kind of container where a closure is necessary, or on anything" Where my invention can be adapted for securing one part to another.
moneia Having thus described my invention, I claimza f In a closure, the combination with a container, a flange formed on the upper extremi'ty thereof and being provided with a plurality of notches and depressions formed on the underside of said flange, a cap for said container, a plurality of substantially triangle shape lugs formed with said cap and having their inclined surfaces arranged to provide cams engageable with the flange to spread the cap over saidflange, a sealing element in said cap and adapted for engagement with said container, and said lugs being adapted for engagement with the underside of said flange ing said cap to the container.
for arrangement in the depressions for secur 85 In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
ALBERT ADELSGN.
