1410702 Bottle capping machines ALUMINUM CO OF AMERICA 2 Jan 1973 [3 Jan 1972] 230/73 Heading B8T A rotatable turret machine for applying either roll-on or swage-on closures to containers, comprises an annular cam member 28 for effecting vertical movement of roll-on spindles 12 (Fig. 1) or swage-on spindles 13 (Fig. 2), the cam member 28 including a replaceable section 90 or 94 selected either for roll-on spindles (Fig. 5) or for swage-on spindles (Fig. 7). Each replaceable cam section 90 and 94 is formed in one piece (or two pieces) and is bolted to the cam member 28. In Figs. 1 and 5, the roll-on spindle 12 carries a spinning handset 60 continuously rotated through gears 34, 24, 22, 20 by the rotation of the turret 10 on column 14. The cam member 28 is stationary and engaged by cam followers 54 each comprising two rollers of different diameters so that the inner roller engages the lower surface, and the outer roller the upper surface, of the cam slot. The cam member 28 including section 90 causes the spindle to move downwardly to apply pressure to closure 42 on container 44. A lower cam follower 64 engages a lower cam slot to move slide 62 downward on the spindle to cause rollers 67 to be cammed outwards by cone 69 and rollers 63 and 65 inwards so that the skirt of the closure is deformed to conform to the container screw-thread as the turret 10a headset 60 rotate. In Figs. 2 and 7, the swage-on spindle 13 carries a crowning head 74 which is not rotated. The cam member 28 includes the section 94 which has a dip in the cam slot which causes the spindle 13 to move downwardly (in position 3 of Fig. 7) for the head 74 to swage or crimp the closure 86 on to the container 88. Capping pressure is only applied briefly. The spindles 12 (Figs. 1 and 5) or 13 (Figs. 2 and 7) are clamped to the turret frame 16 by means of plates engaging ribs on the spindles. The turret frame 16 comprises spaced vertical rods arranged in a circle, the spindles being located in the spaces between the rods. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,353,825.
