Abstract

1,244,653. Capping bottles &c. METAL CLOSURES Ltd. 2 April, 1969 [29 April, 1968], No. 20318/68. Heading B8T. In a multi-head type sealing machine for applying unthreaded metallic closure blanks to externally threaded bottles by thread-rolling, the axial head pressure exerted during the application is transmitted through the bottle neck to support members which engage the bottle under an abutment on its neck. A bottle is transferred from an input star wheel 11 to a centre wheel 12 in which it engages a semicircular recess in a neck-supporting block 22, and is carried forward so that a neck-supporting finger 24 on the block 22 engages a cam surface 21 of a guide rail 19 and pivots under the abutment on the bottle neck. A spinning head (not shown) associated with the block 22 descends to apply the closure blank to the bottle, vertical pressure being transmitted to the supports 22 and 24. The threading process is completed before the bottle reaches the finish of rail 19, whereupon the bottle is released by the finger 24 due to the action of a tension spring 26 and is ready for removal by an outlet star wheel 15.
