Relates to apparatus for applying capsules to containers such as bottles fed intermittently from a conveyer by a star wheel A into position beneath a capsuling head B which contains a resilient membrane 26 deformed to apply the capsule by liquid pressure supplied through pipe 23 and bore 25 by a piston 17 forced down by a cam 38 carried by the shaft 32 which is vertically reciprocated and also carries the head B. According to the invention, a lever 10 pivoted on axis 12 is spring-loaded into the position occupied by a bottle beneath head B, a cam 13 pressing open relief valve 16 to allow liquid from piston 17 to pass into reservoir 21 through pipe 20 instead of into the head when no bottle is present. If a bottle is present, it swings lever 10 aside to remove cam 13 from its cooperating roller 14 and valve 16 is closed by spring 16<SP>1</SP>. The maximum pressure during capsuling is determined by the adjustment of the spring pressure on a relief valve 27. To suit containers of different shape or diameter, the star wheel can be replaced or fitted with a suitably profiled plate ; the head and cam 38 can be raised relative to shaft 32 to suit different heights of containers. The head may be invertable on its bracket 36 to allow removal of the membrane without draining liquid from the liquid conduits. The highest point of the conduits may have a bleed screw for purging air. Specification 764,029 is referred to.
