[Class 125(ii).] A bottle &c. capping machine, particularly for screw caps, comprises a cap support having registering means for the cap movable in a plane to which the axis of the capping head is normal, cap feeding means disposed to hold a cap lightly in the path of the registering means, means for moving the cap support past the cap feeding means to the capping head and back, thereby removing a cap from the feeding means and delivering it to the head, means for supplying containers to the capping head, releasing means on the cap feed and actuating means for the release disposed across the line of supply so that only on the passage of a container to the capping head is a cap released to the cap support. An oscillating arm 10, carried by a collar 11 and actuated by cam and crank action, bears on its upper surface a truncated conical projection 19 which, on moving through the bottom of the stopper chute 20, tilts a cap C, hold by spring-prised fingers 21, on to itself and carries it along vertically beneath a stoppering head 4. The head 4, which may contain magnets, actuated through cam and lever mechanism, descends on to the projection 19, removes the cap and then rises. The arm 10 returns through the chute, the projection 19 being chamfered so as to avoid removing another cap, and the head 4, continuously rotated by a motor 2, descends to apply the cap to the bottle or 24 beneath. The bottles &c. are fed by a conveyer 47 through a cam actuated gate 53 to a table 25, 40 rotated by Geneva stop mechanism. A cam-actuated pressure arm 49 furnished with a pad 48 is provided to hold a bottle firmly in its recess during the screwing on of the cap. Gate mechanism 35-39, actuated by the incoming bottles, releases caps only if a bottle is presented for capping. In the event of a cap jamming in the head the arm 10 cannot complete its stroke and the casing 1b of the column 1 " gives " upwardly, rising from the collar 1c.
