[Class 125 (ii)] In machines for stoppering bottles, flasks, cans, and the like with stoppers of cork or similar material, of the kind provided with a reciprocating stoppering-head, the movement of the stoppering-head 2 is vertical and independent of the stopper-magazine and feed-duct 15 and the stoppers are transferred to the compressor during the movement, guard tongues 28 extending from the duct into the space between the compressor-grips to maintain the stopper in position. The stoppering-heads are reciprocated from a crank-plate 13 through lever and link gear 5, 6 and a connecting-rod 7 provided with a hydraulic or pneumatic spring device to compensate for bottles of different height. According as two or three compressor grips are used, one or two cam grooves 14, 141 are provided for actuation thereof during the movement of the head ; as shown in Fig. 4 three grips are used, one fixed and two 18, 181 movable and operated respectively directly by the groove 14 and indirectly through rack 24 and segment 25 by the groove 141. A shutter 23 is provided for the removal of defective or displaced corks, and of dust or waste. The stoppering-piston 3 is operated by an arm 21 of an angle lever oscillated by the vertical face of a slide 8, which is moved horizontally by a lever 9 and connecting-rod 10 and cam 12. The stoppering- head may control devices during its descent for removing the drop which forms on the cork during compression, as described in Specification 436,924.
