Abstract

1315762 Safety caps REFLEX CORP OF CANADA Ltd 15 Sept 1971 [21 Sept 1970 12 March 1971] 42938/71 Heading B8T A safety cap 16 joined to a plastics member 24 which includes a sealing portion 28 and a biasing portion, consists of a base 18 and a skirt 20 provided with lugs 22 for engaging the locking elements 8 on the outer surface of the container 2, the lugs 22 being held in the notch 10 (Fig. 3) by a spring portion 34 of the biasing portion. The cap 16 is applied to a container 2 by placing a seal 36 into the mouth of the container and applying axial motion to the cap base 18, the seal 36 and flange 40 being brought into sealing contact with the inside of the container mouth and flange 6 respectively by the action of the cap base 18 on the abutments 38. Lugs 22 are engaged with notches 10 by the rotation movement of lugs 22 along cam surfaces 14 into notches 10, the sealing and biasing portions remaining stationary during cap rotation owing to the movement of stem 44 in opening 42, the stem 44 being held in sealing contact with top portion 30 by a nipple 46. The cap is disengaged by applying a downward motion to the cap and rotating the cap to free lugs 22 from the notches 10. Where the sealing portion 28 is permanently fixed to the container 2, the nipple 46 on stem 44 is not provided, allowing for the dispensing of the container contents through the opening 42 when the cap 16 is removed. The top portion 30 may be convexly shaped and the side wall 32 cylindrical or tapering inwardly from a large diameter top portion 30.
