Abstract

1408797 Safety closures A COSTA 18 Dec 1972 [2 Aug 1972] 58437/72 Heading B8T A safety closure has a base element 3 which is pushed on to the neck 2 of a container and is held non-rotationally by ribs 13 and 15 and interlocking projections 16 and recesses 17. A screw cap 6 with tooth-like ribs 24 and a base 19 with grooves 25 engages the screw thread 23 on the base element. Resilient projections 31 on the base 28 disposed opposite bosses 32 on the base 19 displace the cover cap 5 axially from the screw cap 6 so that ribs 27 and 29 do not engage the ribs 24 and grooves 25 respectively. A tear-off strip 33 connected to the cover cap 5 has a pull tab 37 and projections 34 that engage in recesses 35 of the base element 3. To open the container the tear-off strip is removed and a downward axial pressure is applied to the cover cap 5 to overcome the resilient projections 31. The complementay locking means 27 and 29 on the cover cap 5 engage members 24 and 25 on the screw cap so that the latter may be unscrewed by the application of a torque to the cover cap. In a modified version the resilient spacing device may be one annular ring (31) engaging with one boss (32), Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown), and the interengaging ribs (27) and (24) may be of rectangular cross-section. Other modified versions have ribs (39) and (40), Figs. 10-13 (not shown), that engage in the clockwise direction when the closure is put on, but ride past each other when the cover cap 5 is turned counter-clockwise. In other versions ribs (43) and (44), Figs. 14 and 15 (not shown), similarly engage in the clockwise directionfor applying the closure.
