Abstract

1356821 Shaping container ends CROWN CORK & SEAL CO Inc 26 Aug 1971 [22 Oct 1970] 40151/71 Heading B3Q The open end 10 of a container 12 is deformed whilst pressurized fluid is applied to the interior of the container. Apparatus for deforming the open end 10 of the container 12 having side walls and a closed end 16 comprises a fluid source 25 under pressure, a die 14, means 24 for applying said fluid to the interior of a container, a platform 18 opposite the die for supporting the container, which platform includes a supporting surface 26 and a positioning surface 28, and means 20 for moving the die relative to the platform in order to engage the open end of the container. The open end of the container is received between opposing die surfaces 32, 34 by downward movement of movable slide 20. The fluid under pressure enters the interior of the container for purposes of stabilizing and aligning. The supporting surface 26 is provided with a spring 54, and application of pressure by the fluid causes depression of the surface 26 to allow the frusto-conical portion 30 of the container to engage the positioning surface 28 of the platform 18. Pressurized fluid continues to be applied to the container interior to prevent collapse while the open end 10 is deformed by a portion (37), Fig. 1c (not shown) of the outer die surface. The surface 32 of element 38 is held in place on the slide by a threaded cap 40 while a bolt 44 maintains contact between die element 42 and slide 20 and also provides the passageway 24 for the pressurized fluid. Seals 46 are provided to ensure that the fluid pressure is maintained. The upward motion of a piston 48 of the platform is limited by a ring 50 via ears 70, 72 which contact each other prior to the application of fluid. A yoke may be provided to prevent the container from falling off the supporting surface 26, and further embodiments relate to a flanging die (140), Fig. 2 (not shown) and a deburring die (142), Fig. 3 (not shown). The inner die surface (146) of the flanging die is curved downwardly so as to produce a suitable flange on the container, and the outer die surface (232) of the deburring die is completely cylindrical, mating with the inner die surface so as to completely remove burrs on the container ends. All these embodiments may be utilized in a system, Fig. 4 (not shown), whereby the containers are pre-sized, necked-in in two stages so as to reduce the chances of fracture, and finally sized.
