Abstract

1440463 Stoppers; device for inserting and removing BAUSCH & LOMB Inc 2 July 1973 [12 July 1972] 31336/73 Heading B8T An elastic material closure 12, designed particularly to withstand internal pressure in a container, comprises a top portion 23, with a lip engaging portion 33, an integral neck portion 30, and an opening 24 extending into the neck portion and having a bottom surface in the same plane as an outwardly extending endless circular bead 26 located on the neck portion such that it engages sealingly beneath an internal shoulder at the base of a container neck thereby introducing tension along the longitudinal axis of the closure when the lip engaging portion 33 is seated sealingly on the lip 29 of the container 10. A tool 14 has a dowel 28 which may be inserted in the closure opening 24 to stretch the closure along its longitudinal axis so that the bead 26 may be deformed inwardly to enable insertion of the closure into the container opening. The U-shaped cut-out portion 36 maybe inserted between the container lip and the lip engaging portion and pivoted about the lip to distort the bead so that the closure may be removed from the container. In another embodiment of the closure (Fig. 7), an insert sleeve 52 is positioned in the closure opening to force a second circular bead on the closure neck portion into sealing engagement with the container neck. The insert 52 may also be held in position by its cap portion 64 engaging in an annular recess 58. The insert 52 is also provided with an opening 60 so that the tool 14 may be used as before. An expandable metal cap 70 may be crimped over the closure.
