This invention relates to closures for receptacles, and has reference more particularly to closures for bottles, flasks, which a cap or holder carrying on its interior a sealing member of resilient material gaged with the neck of the bottle by a turning' or screwing motion, and thereby forces the sealing member tightly against the end orlrnouthof the neck. I'n closuresof this type, it is usual to cement or otherwise fasten tliferesilient sealing member fixedly tothe holder or cap, with the resuit that in turning the holder to seatithef sealing member against the end of the bottle end, and by theserepeatedturning actions,
the sealingmember will become roughened and Worn, with the resultthat it will fail to y 7 fit fluidtight over the mouth of the bottle,
and leakage will ensue. i
In accordance with the present invention,
this objectionable action is obviated by so mounting the sealing member in its holder or cap, thatwhile said member will be retained therein, theholder will be capable of a circumferential movement relatively thereto;
whereby the holder may be turned or screwed down to force the sealing member against the mouth of the receptacle, without at the same time turning and grinding the sealing member against said month.
In the specification to follow, the invention will be described in detail, and the novel features thereof will be pointed out in the up In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the improved closure, showing the same applied to close the mouth of a bottle, a portion of which later is also shown in longitudinal section;

Referring to the drawings: The improved closure in the particular embodiment shown by way of example to illustrate the invention, comprises a sealing mem- ,is e11 f neck, said membenwill grind against said 1929. Serial No. 361,033.
The holder 5 in the present instance,fis in the form of a tubular metal cap, whose closed end is enlarged radially as at 5 to form an 1 internal chamber to receive the sealing meal-1 her, and Whose neck portion 5 is reduced in diameter and is provided with means for so engaging the neck of the bottle, that when the holder is turned, it williorce the sealing member against the bottle mouth. This engaging means in the present instance is in the form of screw threads 5 on the neck portion of the holder adaptedto engage similar screw threads 3* on the bottle neck.
The sealing member 1 in the present instance, is, in the form of a cup or holder 1 containing a filler 1' of'suitable resilientseal ing material, such for instance as cork, the said cup beingiformed in-its outersidewith a peripheral groove -for depression 1 for the engagement of the retainingdevice 6.
This retaining device may be of any'suit able form which will confine the sealingmember Within the holder While permitting of a circumferential movement of the latter relative to the former, and for this purpose I preferably construct the sealing member in the form of a split spring ring6 adapted to e expanded to clamp around the cup or holder of the sealing member, after the lat ter is seated'in the enlarged end of the holder 5. The sealing member is of such size that it can be inserted freely through the neck portion of the holder 5, and such that when the split ring is expanded to clamp around the sealing members, the external diameter of the expanded ring will be greater than the internal diameter of the neck 5, thereby preventing the escape of the sealing memberfrom the holder, and will be less than the internal diameter of theenlargedportionof holder and is, expanded and forced over the dental-e'scapetherefrom. As a result, when 7 the holder is screwed down onthe bottle, its

Due to the fact that, diameter of the spring ring when thus expanded is greater than theinternal diameter of the contractthan the internal diameter of the enlarged portion 5* of the holder, the sealing member will be retained loosely within the holder,and
at the same time will be prevented from acciclosed'end will engage the sealing member and force the same against the mouth of the bottle neck, in which action, the holder will turnaround relativeto the sealing member and without turning the latter, the resultbeing that the sealing member willbe forced tightly, to itsseat without grinding or wear thereon. 1
Due to the manner of confining the sealing 7 member within its holder as above described,
the sealing member may be removed from the holder at will when it is desired to renew or replace said member, which removal may be readily effected by introducing a suitable tool or instrument into'the holder and engaging it with the retaining spring, so as to expand the spring and disengage it from the sealing member, whereupon both the sealing member and spring may be removed separately from the holder. It will be obvious that while the invention is shown as applied in connection with arece'p'tacle in the formof a bottle, it will be applicable as well to other forms of receptacles,
such as jars, cartons, and similar receptacles;
' and while the invention is illustrated as embodied in a certain detailed form and arrangement of parts, it will be understood that these details may be variously modified and changed by the skilled mechanic without departing from the spirit of the invention; and it will be further understood that the invention is not limited to any particular form or construction of the parts, except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.
7 Having thus described my invention,what
I claim is i r 1'. A closure for receptacles comprising a member to close over and seal the open mouth of the receptacle,a holder for the. sealing member surrounding the same and adapted by a turning movement to beengaged with the recptacle and-force the sealing member 5 of the holder, and is less against the mouth thereof, anda retaining device for confining the sealing member in the holder while permitting of a circumferential'movement of the holder relative thereto, said retaining device being in the form of a spring engaged with the sealing member and detachably interlocked with the holder.
2. A closure for receptacles as defined in claim 1, characterized by the fact that the retaining device is in the form of a split ring, engaging the sealing member, and disconnected from the holder. 7
3. A closure for receptacles defined in claim 1, characterized by the fact that. the retaining device isin the form of a split ring clamped to the sealing member and movable circumferentially relative to the holder.
4. Aclosure for receptacles comprising a 7 member to close over and seal theopen mouth of the receptacle, a holder for the sealing member in the formof a capenlarged radially at its closed end to receive the sealing member, and having a contracted open necked portion, said holder beingadapted by a turning movement to be engaged with the receptacle and force the sealing member against the mouth thereof, and a split ring =insertablethrough the contracted neck of the I holder and expansible't'o; clamp around the sealing member, the diameter of said ring when expanded, being greater. than the internal diameter of said neck,- and vless than the internal diameter of said enlarged portion of the cap; whereby the sealing member will be retained in the enlarged portion of the cap, while permitting of a circumferential movement of the cap relative thereto.
