Abstract
1,026,056. Stamping. CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Inc. Feb. 19, 1963 [April 25, 1962], No. 6589/63. Heading B3Q. [Also in Division B5] A method of reshaping a tubular body wherein the body is enclosed within a shaped mould, its ends are sealed and a gas mixture is introduced and exploded therein, thereby producing a shock wave which expands the object to conform to the shape of the mould. An openended can body 16 is positioned on a sealing ring 27 of a support 18, located in a block 17. A fluid-operated vertically reciprocating plunger 19 having an end closure 20 and a flange 21 located and retained within a recess 22 of the support 18 is raised to engage the inside of the can and lift the support and the can until the upper end of the latter engages a seal 26 of a central portion 25 about which are disposed a pair of moulds 35. The moulds are closed by a double-acting fluid motor 33. The exhausting of the can body and the injection of the gaseous explosive mixture are controlled by a rotary valve 37. Firing of a sparking plug 28 positioned centrally in the portion 25 explodes the mixture to expand and deform the body to the contours of the mould. Materials such as coated or uncoated steel, aluminium and alloys thereof and plastics, e.g. polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene or polycarbonates may be used. One or both ends of the bodies may be fitted with closure members which may also be deformed and the bodies may be of a cylindrical, oval, square or tapered cross-section. Metalended plastic bodies may be used. The blanks may be lithographed or printed prior to forming and decorative patterns may be formed thereon according to the mould shape. The gaseous explosive mixtures may comprise town gas of 1000 B.Th.U./cu. ft., acetylene and oxygen and various hydrocarbons or hydrogen with air or oxygen. In an embodiment flanged cans are positioned during lifting in a recess 53 of a support 47 and supported on a recessed head 52 into which the base of the can is deformed, subsequent lowering of the assembly causes the can to be ejected from the recess by the relative movement of the support 47 and the head 52.
