Abstract
743,526. Soldering; tube expanders. FAITHFULL, A. E., and FAITHFULL, R. J. Aug. 11, 1953 [Aug. 11, 1952], No. 20167/52. Class 83 (4). In a method of joining pipes 1, 2, Fig. 1, of the same diameter, the end of the pipe 1 is expanded by the use of the stepped punch shown in Fig. 3 to form a socket 3 having a tapered shoulder 6 and providing an annular capillary recess 4 when the pipe 2 is fitted into that socket to abut the shoulder. The interfitted portions of the pipes are cleaned and treated with soldering flux and heated by blow lamp, and, while hot tinman's solder is applied to the mouth of the recess until the solder runs along the recess. The joint is then allowed to cool. There may be a protuberant shoulder 7 of solder. The punch comprises four portions of decreasing diameter, namely a driving portion 8 having a diameter greater than that of the socket, a socket-forming portion 9, a conical base-forming portion 10, and a pipe-aligning portion 11 having a diameter equal to that of the internal diameter of the pipe and terminating in a rounded or chamfered leading edge 12.
