Joints with yielding inner part expanded ; joints with yielding outer part compressed.-A hose pipe is coupled to a nozzle or other pipe by a union which comprises an inner member 5 having a number of conical surfaces 7, each provided with a split friction ring 10; after the union has been inserted into the pipe 13 a tight metal sleeve 14 is slid back to an abutment on the member 5 ; any attempt to withdraw the union then causes the rings 10 to move along the surfaces 7 and grip the pipe. The rings may be tapered as shown or have a circular cross-section.
