[Class 89 (iii)] [Also in Group XXV] The driver head 6 of a tack driving machine is carried by a plunger 4 slidable in a tube 4<1> and is impelled by a spring 5. A sear 8 is pivoted to one arm 10 of a bell crank lever 11, and is urged into engagement with a groove 7 in the plunger 4 by a spring 12'. The other arm 13 of the bell crank lever 11 is pivotally connected through a toggle linkage 15, 17, 19 to a lever 21 pivoted to a handle 23. The operation of the lever 21 raises the plunger 4 until the sear 8 is disengaged therefrom by a projection 24 on the tube 4' when the spring 5 drives the plunger downwardly. Tacks 3 are fed to the driver 6 on a slotted strip 2 from a magazine 1 by a feed wheel 25 having projections 26 engaging the heads of the tacks. On raising the lever 21 the arm 13 of the bellcrank lever 11 engages a pin 32 on the one arm of a bell crank lever 31, the other arm of which is slotted to engage a pin on an arm 28 which carries a pawl 27 acting upon a projection 26 to rotate the wheel 25 until the next projection 26 is engaged. A second pawl 34 prevents backward rotation of the wheel 25. Operation of the machine is prevented -when the magazine 1 is empty by means comprising a bell crank lever 35 carrying a roller 37 which drops when the tack heads no longer support it. The other arm of the bell crank 35' then releases a folding arm 39 which is spring urged into the path of the bell crank 11. A pawl 41, Fig. 5, holds each tack below the driver 6, and as each tack is fed any forwardly-protruding strip is passed into a hole 41<1> to be cut off by the descending driver.
