[Class 89 (iii)] A desk stapling or tacking machine is provided with a holder containing a plurality of superposed strips of staples so that the strip at the bottom enters the operative position when the strip being used is exhausted and the pusher is brought to the rear. The machine comprises a spring-pressed hammer 11, 12 for driving the staples 7 which rest on the base 2 of the machine. A pusher 5 and spring 6 press the operative staple strip towards a pivoted front shutter 9, and other strips of staples 7a are held above the strip 7 by a weight 14 with spring-pressed releaseable catches 16. A knob 21 and a lug 20 integral with or attached to the push-rod, 5 enable the push-rod to be pulled to the rear when desired. The lug 20 may be spring mounted so that is returns to its forward position after pulling the push rod to the rear. When the strip of staple 7 is exhausted, the push-rod 5 is withdrawn to the rear and a new strip of staples 7a then enters into the operative position under the action of the weight 14. A cover 34 is pivoted to the sides 4 and slots 13 are provided in the sides to facilitate refilling. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the weight 14 is replaced by a spring-pressed arm 36 which is pivoted to the sides 4 of the machine and may also be connected to the pivoted cover 34 of the machine so that it swings out of operative position when it is desired to refill the machine. A releasable rocking catch 29, Fig. 1, or 25, Fig. 3, is provided to stop the push-rod moving to the rear before the staple strip is exhausted.
