Class 89(3) In a stapling machine, wherein a staple driver 18 performs the staple driving operation under influence of a bar spring 16, a star wheel 11 is provided which is rotated by actuation of the operating lever 3 so that one of the arms of the star wheel 11 engages on abutment 15 on the spring 16 and raises the free end of the spring 16 until, at substantially the end of the actuating movement of the lever 3, the star wheel arm disengages from the abutment 15 to release the spring 16 so that the driver 18 is carried thereby performs a staple driving operation. The operating mechanism for the star wheel comprises a ratchet wheel 10 engaged by a pawl 8 carried by a cranked lever pivoted at 25 to the housing 2 and carrying a roller at its free end engaged by the operating lever 3. As described, two star wheels 11 are provided on a rotatable pin 13, each associated with a ratchet wheel 10 and enclosing between them a buffer cylinder 14. The pawl 8 is shaped to engage each of the ratchet wheels 10 and the spring 16 is adapted to pass between the star wheels 11 so that it can engage the buffer cylinder 14. The block 15 comprises two rollers 17 each associated with one of the star wheels 11. During the downward stroke of the driver 18, an element (not shown) carried thereby, engages a nose 31 on a toothed rail 30 which is consequently moved rearwardly against a spring 32 which subsequently causes forward movement of the rail 30 on the upward stroke of the driver 18. The teeth 37 of the rail 30 engage a tongue 39 carried by a slide 38 on the staple support, and during the forward movement of the rail 30, the slide is entrained thereby to feed the staples.
