Abstract

122,109. British United Shoe Machinery Co., (United Shoe Machinery Co.). Oct. 16, 1917. Lasting.-In a lasting-machine, such as of tho type described in Specification 14453/97, means are provided to bond each tack inwardly of the shoe in the same cycle of the machine in which the -tack is driven. These means comprise a bender 40, Fig. 3, slidably mounted in a groove in a thumb spring piece or wiper 24 which is secured to the under side of the usual'tack block 6, Fig. 1, by the same screws 22 that secure the block to the usual slide 8. An off-set portion 46 of the bender is pivoted at 48 to one arm 52 of a pivoted angle-lever 50, another arm 54 of which is bored to receive a spring-pressed slidable but non-rotatable stem 56 carrying an adjustable dog 64; a third arm 76 of the lever 50 is formed with an inclined face 74 adapted to engage a correspondingl face 78 on the machine frame. In operation, as the driver 28 ascends after driving a tack, a shoulder 70 on the driven bar engages the lower face 68 of the dog 64 and swings the lever 50 about its pivot, with the result that the bender is moved forwards between the usual spring-pressed tack-holding fingers to engage the tack just driven from the fingers and bend it into the position shown in Fig. 6; the bender is preferably notched at 44, Fig. 3, to prevent lateral movement of the tack, and is bevelled backwards from the notch, as shown at 82, to facilitate its entry between the tack fingers. When the slide 8, Fig. 1, -is retracted, the engagement of the inclined faces 74, 78 restores the angle-lever 50 to its normal position. As the slide 8 is again advanced, the dog 64 engages a flat face 80 on the driver bar and yields backwards until, upon the descent of the driver, it snaps forwards into position to be engaged again by the shoulder 70. Specification 26086/10 also is referred to. 1917.
