To all'whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, EDWARD ERIoKsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leather-Skiving Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such .as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present 1nvent1on relates to leather skiving machines, and more particularly to the patent to Jacob R. Scott, No. 969,987, r
dated September 13, 1910. Heretofore difficulty has'been experienced in machinespro- I vided with blank feeding mechanism like that disclosed in the Scott patent inprope erly feeding the first or lowermost blankwhen the feeding mechanism is started in operation, with the result that the blank may be mutilated or the machine stopped I or parts thereof damaged or broken.
The object of the present invention is to avoid this objection and to render the feeding mechanism certain in operation and capable of feeding the first or lowermost blank without liability of damage to the blank or to the machine.
With these objects in view, the present invention consists of the devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and more'particularly defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate what is now considered the preferred form of the present invention as embodied in the'machine of the Scott patent above referred to, Figure 1 is a verticalside sectional view of so much of the Scott mas chine as is necessary .to an understanding of the present invention, showing the feed slide and its actuating mechanism; Fig.; 2

A pressure device or roll a mounted upon the shaft 5 acts to force the blank into the d e cavity and cooperates with the die roll in presenting the blank to the skiving knife 6 mounted in fixed position at the rearof the machine. The blanks are supported in a vertical pile in the magazine or hopper 8,
the lowermost blank resting upon the table 9 and being fed tocthe pressure and die rolls through the passageway 10 by means of the feeding fingers 11 carried by the feed slide "12. Mounted in lugs 13 extending downwardly from the lower portion of the feed slide is the studfor pin 14 by which the slide is given itsfeeding and its return The parts thus far described are identical with those disclosed in the Scott patent above referred to.
The actuating mechanism for the feed slide comprises an oscillating shaft 15upon which is secured the arm 16. To the upper end of this arm is pivoted the link 17 which is cut away or recessed in its upper surface as at 18 for a purpose shortly to be'described, andcis provided near its free end with an upstanding shoulder or abutment 19 for engaging the pin 14 and causing the feedslide tomake its feeding stroke.

feed slide isgiven its return or idle stroke by means of alatch '20 pivoted at 21 on the link 17 and normally held in raised p0si-- with a cam groove 23 to receive a cam roll I 24 carried upon the pivoted arm 25. v The lever 25 carrying the roll 24 may be lowered and raised by means of the connection 26, lever 28, and rod 29, extending to suitable treadle mechanism, such, for example, as that shown in the Scott patent above re ferred to, producing a corresponding move-' ment in the link 17 for the purposes of stopping and starting the feed slide. Thelink is maintained in its raised or normal posi-' tion by means of suitable locking devices for the treadle mechanism as illustrated in said patent. p
It is often desirable in machines of this character to stop the feed slide momentarily for the purpose of replenishing the supply of blanks in thehopper ormagazine, or for some other reason, yet without stopping the movement of other parts of the machine,
including the actuating mechanism for the feed slide. 1 In order to insure proper feeding of the first or lowermost blank when the feed slide is again started in operation, it is essential'that the first feeding movement of the slide be a full and not a partial movement, and preferably this is accomplished by causing the feed slide to come to rest at the, end or limit of its feeding" movement so that when started again in operation 'it will first make its idle stroke and then a full feeding stroke. To insure the feed slide stopping in its extreme inward position the shoulder or abutment 19 on the link is extended to such a. height that even when the lever 25 and cam roll Qfk are lowered to disconnect the link 17 from the feed slide, theabutment will still be in position to engage the pin 14 to cause the feed slide to make its feeding movement. By this lowering of the feed slide, however, the latch 20 will be withdrawn from engagement with the pin 14 so that on the return or idle stroke of the link 17 the feed slide will be left in its inward position where it will remain. unaffected. by the continued move- .ments of its actuating mechanism.
When the lever 25 and roll 24: are raised, the'latch 20 is brought to a position to engage the pin 1% (the position of which is shown in dotted outline in Fig. 1) as the link approaches the limit of its inward or feeding movement, andwill be forced down against the action of spring 22 until at the end of the inward or feeding movement of the link, the latch rises and engages the inner face of the pin 14, whereupon the feed slide is again set in operation, beginning with an idle or return stroke. Inasmuch as the lever 25 is raised by treadle mechanism under the control of the operator, the position of the link 17 at such time in its feeding or return movements is uncertain, depending wholly upon the particular point or time in the cycle of operationof the feed slide actuating mechanism that the treadle is depressed by the operator.
:of forcingthe feed slide a greater or less distance in the direction of its idle move ment when the top of the link was brought into engagement with the pin carried by the feed slide, with the result that when the pin was engaged by the abutment onthe link on its inward or feeding movement, the slide would be given a partial feeding stroke, and a corresponding movement to the lowermost blank on account of the frictional contact .of the latter with the feeding fingers. The
presentation of a blank to the die roll under such conditions would be out of time with relation to the position or movement of the die cavity and as a result the blank would be spoiled and the machine stopped in operation or some of its parts damaged or broken.
In the present invention on account of the cutting away of the upper surface of the link and the provision of a pivoted latch, the link may be immediately raised to its normal or operative position irrespective of the relative position of link and feed slide in the lineof the feed, and will thereafter automatically become operative to set the feed slide in regular operation when the link reaches substantially the end .of its feeding movement. It is thus impossible for the feed slide to be given a partial work feeding stroke when first set in operation, and damage to the blank or machine or stoppage of the machine is thus avoided.
While the present invention has been described as embodied in the specific construction illustrated in the drawings, it is to be understood that it is not limited thereto, as it is capable of embodiment in many other forms and constructions.
Having thus described the present invention, what is claimed is:
1. A skiving machine, having, in combination, skiving mechanism and blank feeding mechanism, including a feed slide, an actuating member for moving the feed slide in both directions, devices for rendering said member operative, said devices comprising means arranged to be actuated by the operator irrespective of the relative position of the feed slide and member, and mechanism automatically becoming operative thereafter when the member and slide are in predetermined relative position, substantially as described.
2. A skiving machine, having, in combination, skiving mechanism and blank feeding mechanism, including a feed slide, an actuating member for the feed slide movable into normal position irrespective of the relative position of member and slide, said member being provided with means for actuating the feed slide in one direction when both in and out of normal position, and with means for actuating the feed slide in the opposite direction when in normal position only, and means for moving the actuating member into and out of normal position, substantially as described.
3. A skiving machine, having, in combination, skiving mechanism and blank feeding mechanism, including a feed slide, a lever, a link pivoted at one end to said lever, the free end of the link being movable toward and from the feed slide and being provided with an abutment for actuating the feed slide in one direction when the free end of the link is both in its nearer and also in its more distant positions relative to the feed slide, a latch pivoted upon the feed slide for actuating the feed slidein the opposite direction only when the free end of the lever is in its nearer position relative to the feed slide, and means for moving the free end of the actuating lever toward and from the feed slide, substantially as described.
4. A skiving machine, having, in combination, skiving mechanism and blank feeding mechanism including a feed slide provided with a contact piece supported beneath the same for actuating the slide in.
