My invention. relates to that class of ma-.
chines adapted for applying stays or reinforcing strips to the corner joints of boxes made of paperboard or like material, in which are embodied stay strip applying;
means and stay-strip feeding means; the
said feeding means being operative to feed a stay-strip from a supply roll to said applying means to be operated upon thereby in usual and well known manner.
The feeding means in most common use in this class of machines comprise a reciprocating strip-engaging device and means for operating the same in a manner whereby it will be caused on its forward feeding stroke to engage and carry forward the strip and then become released from said strip at the limit of its forward stroke so as to move backwardly without producing any corre sponding backward movement of the strip. Such feeding device comprises a carrier having-mounted thereontwo cooperating gripping members arranged to permit of the passage of the stay-strip therebetween, one of which members is stationary with respect to the carrier and the other pivoted for movement to and from a gripping position relative to said stationary member. Connected with this movable gripping member is an actuating means which, in the operation of the machine, first rocks said member into gripping engagement with the strip, and then, by a continued movement, imparts a forward stroke to the complete feed device.
Such forward stroke of the feed device de termines the forward feeding of the staystrip. It sometimes happens, however, that the pivoted gripping member after being initially brought into engagement with the strip, rebounds from the strip and then moves forward slightly before it. again positively grips thestrip, or it may lose its hold on the strip when brought into reengagement therewith, then. move forward slightly and then grip again. This means short and consequently inaccurate feeding. Because of this, it has been the object of my inven tion to provide means for assuring the movable gripping member being maintained in gripping relation with the strip during feeding movement after its initial engagement therewith. This object I attain by means of my improved feeding device as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of part of a stay-applying machine provided with my invention.

The. machine here shown as provided with my invention is a stayei of well known construction and operation, and therefore will be only briefly described herein.
The several parts constitutingthe machine are mounted upon a suitable supporting frame, indicated generally by the reference numeral 2. In the upper part of this frame is journaled drive shaft 3 having at its rear end a clutch-controlled drive pulley l.
At the front end of the machine isthe stay-applying means, comprising two eooperating presser dies, the lower of which, indicated at 5, is normally stationary and adapted to support a box-corner, while the upper one, indicated at 6, is vertically movable and adapted to press a stay-strip upon the box-corner on said lower die. The movable die 6 1s mounted in a reciprocating head 7 which is actuated from a crank-pin on the drive shaft 8 through the medium of a pitman 8, in usual manner.
In the operation of the machme, the staystrip, indicated at s, is adapted to be fed 7 from a supply reel (not shown) to a position between said presser dies, by a suitable feed device. This feed device comprises a reciprocatory carrier plate 9 shdably connected with a stationary guide plate 10 and turn stroke of the device.
having connected therewith two co6perating gripping members, one of which, indi cated at 11, is fixed with respect to the plate 9 and arranged to engage with the staystrip at the under side thereof, and the other, indicated at 12, is pivoted to the plate 9 and arranged to engage with the stay-strip at the upper side thereof. With this construction of feed device, the movable or pivoted member 12 should be caused to cooperate with the lower member 11 to engage and carry forward the strip upon the forward stroke of the device, and to release the strip at the limit of said forward stroke and maintain such release during the re- Such operation of the feed device is effected in the present case by means of an actuating lever 18, pivoted at itsupper end to the frame at 1 1, and at its lower end connected through a link 15 with a lever arm 16 of the pivoted member 12. The lever 13 is given its forward throw by a cam 17 on the shaft 2 engaging a roll 18 thereon, and is given its return throw by a connecting spring 19. Upon the forward throw of the lever 13, the member 12 is first caused to rock downward into gripping engagement with the strip lying over the lower member, as shown in Fig.2, after which, the continued movement of the lever effects an advance of the feed device-comprising the carrier 9 and supported members-and engaged strip. After the lever has swung forward a predetermined distance, it is then retracted, thereby operating to first raise the member 12 to stripreleasing position by rocking its arm 16 into contact with a stop projection 20 on the carrier plate 9, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and then returning the feed device to its starting position.
The machine as thus far described is of usual construction and operation and does not require a more detailed description for the proper understanding of my present invention. V
In order to prevent disengagement of the member 12 from the stay-strip after being initially brought into engagement therewith, in case of a slight backward rocking or rebound of said member, I provide means for yieldingly maintaining a gripping relation between said member and the strip throughout the feeding stroke of the device. This means, in the present case, comprises a dog carried by the member 12 at its front end for direct engagement with the stay strip, which dog is yieldingly supported by said member for a limited vertical movement relative thereto. This is accomplished as here shown by supporting said dog in an openvertical slot in the end of the member 12 'by'means of a pin or screw 26 passing througlia'vertically elongated slot 27 therein, andby a spring 28 attached to the member 12 with its front end bearing against the top of said dog and holding it in a normal lowered position with the upper end wall of its slot 27 in contact with the screw 26, as shown in Fig. 3.
With this construction and arrangement. of parts, when the member 12 is rocked downward by the action of the lever 13, this gripping dog 25 will be brought to a stop upon reaching a position of gripping engagement with the staystrip, after which a slight additional movement of the member 12 will take place until the pin 26 carried thereby contacts with the lower end of the slot 27 in the dog, as shown in Fig. 2, at which time the feed device will commence its forward feeding stroke. In case of a slight rebound of the pivoted member 1.2, however, its gripping relation with the staystrip will be maintained by the dog 25, as shown in Fig. 4, which will be yieldingly held to its gripping position by the spring 28; this being permitted by the vertically elongated slot 27 in the dog allowing of the upward movement of the pin 26 therein, as shown.
This application is a division of my pending application Serial No. 110,707, filed July 22, 1916.
What I claim is 1. In a stay-applying machine, a stay striphfeeding device comprising a reciprocating carrier, a pair of cooperating gripping members mounted on said carrier and one of which is movable to and from a gripping position relative to the other, actuating means for moving said movable member to and from its grippin position,
and means for yieldingly maintaining said movable gripping member in gripping relation with its cooperating member during the working stroke of the device, said means comprising a dog yieldingly supported by said movable member for engagement with the strip.
2. In a stay-applying machine, a stay strip feeding device comprising a reciprocating carrier, a pair of cooperating gripping members mounted on said carrier and one of which is pivoted for movement to and from a gripping position relative to the other, actuating means for moving said piv oted member to and from its gripping position, and means for yieldingly maintaining said pivoted gripping member in gripping relation with its cooperating member during the working stroke of the device,
said means comprising a dog yieldingly supported by said pivoted member for engagement with the strip.
, 3. In a stay-applying machine, a stay strip feeding device comprising a reciprocating carrier, a pair of cooperating gripping members mounted on said carrier and one of which is pivoted for movement to and from a gripping position relative to the other, actuating means connecting directly with said pivoted member for moving the same to and from its gripping position and also imparting reciprocating movement to the carrier, and means for yieldingly maintaining said movable gripping member in gripping relation with its cooperating member during the working stroke of the device, said means comprising a dog yieldingly supported by said pivoted member for engagement with the strip.
4. In a stay-applying machine, a stay strip feeding device comprising a reciproeating carrier, a pair of cooperating gripping members mounted on said carrier and one oi? which is pivoted for movement to and from a gripping position relative to the other, actuating means connecting directly with said pivoted member for moving the same to and from its gripping position and also imparting reciprocating movement to the carrier, said pivoted member having a guide way, a strip-engaging dog slidably mounted in said guide Way, and means holding said dog in yielding position relative to the pivoted member.
5. In a stayaapplying machine, a stay strip feeding device comprising a reciprocating carrier, a pair of cooperating gripping members mounted on said carrier and one of which is pivoted for movement to and from a gripping position relative to the other, actuating means connecting directly with said pivoted member for moving the same to and from its gripping position and also imparting reciprocating movement to the carrier, a dog having a slot-and-pin connection with the pivoted member for limited movement relative thereto, and a spring holding said dog in yielding position relative to the pivoted member for direct engagement with the strip.
