Abstract
640,073. Stapling. TATE, R. H. Feb. 3, 1948, No. 3150. [Class 89(iii)] In a stapling device in which wire is' drawn from a spool 19 through a straightening device 26, 28 by a feeding device 34, 35, whence it passes to a cutting, forming' and driving head, and in which the various operations are performed in timed relation by cams on a shaft 16 rocked by a handle 15, the staple-former 45 is capable of movement additional to its normal movement to allow for varying work thickness, by a subsidiary cam 72: The' device includes a full-stroke mechanism. The spool 19 is provided with a brake composing a spring strip 21 carrying friction pads 22 and held against rotation by a fixed stop 37 which serves also as a pivot for a lever 36 which operates a slide 32 carrying fixed and movable feed jaws 34, 35. The lever 36 is rocked against a spring 40 by a cam 42 on the shaft 16. The straightening device comprises a spring- pressed grooved roller 26 which co-operates with a notch 28 in a grooved plate 27. The wire is severed by a shear blade carried by the head 45 co-operating with a fixed disc 44 and is supported in a preferably dove-tailed slot 57 in a stapleforming horn 52 advanced by a spring 54. The head 45, which is carried by a lever arm 46 operable by a cam 51 against a spring 48, is of inverted U-form and its limbs 49, 50 bend down the legs of the staple which is then driven by a driver 59 slidable in the head and operable against a spring 60 by an arm 62 on the cam 51. The subsidiary cam 72 is secured to the cam 51 and co-operates with a spring-strip 73 on the lever arm 46. The full-stroke mechanism comprises a double-acting pawl 69 controlled by a spring 70 and co-operating with a ratchet wheel 64, the pawl being rocked at the conclusion of a stroke by a stop 65 or 66 engaging a finger 71 thereon. The anvil 63 may be provided with two grooves 81, 82 inclined to the plane of the staple so that when clinched its limbs lie side by side.
