Abstract
1,152,171. Nailing. WHITFIELD, HODGSONS & BROUGH Ltd. 17 Aug., 1966 [22 May, 1965], No. 21772/65. Heading B4C. A nailing machine for e.g. securing the toppiece to the heel of a shoe comprises a wire feeding means 510, 512, swaging means 604 arranged to form a necked portion on a leading end of the wire W, shearing means 552, 596 adapted to sever a nail from the wire at the necked portion thereof thereby forming a point on the nail and means 626 for driving the nail into a workpiece. The feeding means comprises a wheel 510 freely rotatable on a pin 514 secured in a housing and provided with a groove (522, Fig. 6) for the reception of the wire W, the latter being urged into the groove by a roller 512 mounted on a spring loaded lever 528; the wheel 510 is rotated at each cycle of the machine by a pawl-and-ratchet mechanism 520 operated by means of a bar (640, Fig. 9) moved downwardly by a pin-and-cam device (652, 654). The position of the pin 652 may be varied by means of a handle (650) so that the length of wire fed by the wheel 510 is adjustable. The swaging means comprises a pair of anvils 604 mounted between a pair of blocks 596, 598 secured in a carrier 582 which is pivotally mounted on the housing; the anvils are adapted to be moved towards each other in order to swage an end portion of the wire by means of screw abutments carried on a pair of levers (612, Fig. 2 and 8) which are moved inwardly by means of cams (620) mounted thereon being actuated by an abutment (624) secured to a main cam plate 570. The pivots (614, Fig. 2) for the levers 612 are carried by eccentric pins whch may be moved by a handle 618 to a position in which the screw abutments do not contact the anvils thereby, if desired, preventing the swaging operation. A tool 576 is provided for forming a head on the end of the nail and is slidably mounted, against the action of a spring 590, in a bracket 578 attached to the carrier 582 the tool being struck by a surface 594 on the cam plate 570 at the end of a driving in stroke. The wire is clamped during the heading operation by means of jaws 552, 548, the jaws 548 being urged towards the jaws 552 by means of a roller 560 mounted on a cam-actuated lever 562.
