Abstract
1,008,914. Riveting. R. STEIN. Sept. 28, 1962 [Sept. 28, 1961], No. 36952/62. Heading B3U. A rivet setting machine comprises a frame, a reciprocably mounted rivet setting mechanism, an anvil, means for reciprocating the setting mechanism, a pair of jaws and spring means supporting the jaws for movement towards and away from one end of the setting mechanism. The machine 10 comprises an arm 16 supporting an anvil 18 and an arm 12 in which slides a guide sleeve 22. A pin 21 projects from the sleeve through a slot 19 and has attached thereto one end of a spring 25 which urges the sleeve against a stop 23. Rivet holding jaws 28 and 30 are attached to the sleeve 22 by flat springs 32 and 34. Within the guide sleeve 22 slides a spindle 24 which carries a rivet setting tool 26. The spindle 24 is reciprocated by a doubleacting fluid-cylinder 90, acting through links 74 and 78 and a piston-rod extension 86. The spindle 24 of the rivet setting mechanism comprises a sleeve 40, a sleeve 36 and a tip 42. The tool 26 slides in the tip 42 and is acted on by a light spring 48 which is confined between a flange 44 on the tool and a bush 50 screwed into the tip 42. The upper end 60 of the tool is reduced in diameter to form a shoulder which engages the edge of a bore 56 in a slider 55 which is accommodated in a transverse bore in a plunger 52. The end of the slider 55 has a cam surface 62 thereon which co-operates with a shoulder 64 formed in the wall of the sleeve 40 to move the slider 55 transversely. A leaf spring 70 biases the slider to the left. The plunger 52 is acted on by a heavy spring 72 which abuts the closed end of a bore in the sleeve 36. Rivet feeding means.-A hopper 156 comprises a fixed cylindrical wall 160, a base 162 and a rotor 164. The rotor is mounted on a shaft 166 and is intermittently rotated by a pawl-and-ratchet mechanism operated through a lost-motion link 198 connected to the pistonrod extension 86. Rivets leave the hopper through a slot 172 and pass into a raceway 122 having a slot 124. The slot 124 is aligned with a slot 128 in a throat-plate 126, which also has an arcuate slot 130 and a further slot 132 which is parallel to the slot 128. An arm 136 is pivoted to the raceway at 138 and has an arcuate portion 134 at one end which extends into the slot 130. At the other end of the arm 136 is a bush through which passes one end of a rod 140. A spring 150 is confined between the bush and a collar 152 on the rod. At the other end of the rod is roller 144 which co-operates with a cam surface 148 formed on the pistonrod extension 86. Operation.-A pedal 114 controls a solenoidoperated valve 102 and admits hydraulic fluid to the cylinder 90 through a conduit 100. As the piston 92 moves to the left (Fig. 1) the rivetsetting mechanism 24 moves downwardly so that the tool 26 pushes a rivet from between the jaws 28 and 30 into aligned holes in a workpiece positioned over the anvil. When the lower end of the rivet shank contacts the anvil the tool 26 moves upwardly relative to the tip 42 and the shoulder on the tool engages the edge of the bore 56 in the slider 55 and raises the plunger 52 against the spring 72. When the cam surface 62 engages the shoulder 64 the slider is moved transversely, slips off the shoulder on the tool and the plunger -52 is driven down and delivers a hammer blow to the tool 26 which effects the initial deformation of the rivet. Thereafter the tool 26 continues to move upwardly relative to the tip 42 until the flange 44 abuts the bush 50 and enables the main rivet-setting force to be transmitted. During the working stroke of the piston 92 the rod 140 is moved towards the jaws 28 and 30 and compresses the spring 150 which rotates the arm 136 counter-clockwise (Fig. 7), so that on the return stroke of the piston the part 134 re-enters the slot 130 and transfers a rivet from the slot 128 to the slot 132. Simultaneously the link 198 is operated to turn the rotor of the hopper and feed another rivet into the raceway.
