In an automatic riveting machine in which rivets are automatically fed to a rivet-holder for setting by a reciprocating punch tool cooperating with a stationary anvil, an expansible rivet holder is slidably mounted on the punch tool to which it is resiliently coupled to move between an upper loading position in which the holder projects below the punch tool and a lower ejection position in which it is arrested while the punch tool moves downward to expand the rivet holder and eject and set the rivet. The rivet holder comprises a sleeve 5 divided into two semi-cylindrical parts 6 and held by an integral collar 7 in a head 8, with sufficient clearance to permit limited expansion of the halves. Two spring-loaded shoes 10 press the halves on to the punch tool 1 to ensure that the rivet-holder and tool move together until the rivet holder is positively arrested by an upper stop 18 and a lower stop 17. With the punch in the raised position a rivet 15 from a delivery shoot enters the rivet holder through a T-shaped slot in the side and is supported by its head on a shoulder 14. The punch descends carrying the rivet holder with it until the lower end of the rivet is just supported on a locating pin 4 of an anvil 2. At this point the rivet holder engages the stop 17 and as the punch tool 1 continues its downward movement the halves 6 are opened and the rivet is ejected. In a modification, the rivet holder consists of a resilient sleeve split longitudinally at one side so as to normally grip the tool resiliently, the sleeve carrying a laterally extending arm movable between the stops 17 and 18.
