Abstract
519,535. Punching; riveting. HEINKEL, E. Sept. 19, 1938, No. 27299. [Class 83 (iv)] A machine for riveting together thin imperforate parts 3, 4 of metal or other material by means of countersunk rivets comprises a reciprocable stamp 6, means 12 for supporting a rivet in suitable position for being struck by said stamp through the work 3, 4 while supported by a countersunk bolster 16 and a die 19, Fig. 2, for forming a closure head on the rivet while this is engaged by the stamp. The bolster 16 and die 19 are held down by springs 18 in a slide 14 which is laterally moved by a lever 15a and an oscillating eccentric 51, Fig. 3, in timed relation with the stamp 6, to bring these tools 16, 19 alternately into position between the rivet and a slide 22 which is reciprocated vertically by a link 23 and the eccentric to raise the tools 16, 19 alternately into the guide 5. The work is clamped to the guide 5 by a sleeve 12 and a spring-pressed sleeve 7. To prevent the wads punched from the work, which normally fall out through a bore 17, from sticking to the rivet, the bolster or a sleeve 40, Fig. 5, carried thereby may have a slotted extremity adapted to grip the wads 41 when engaged in the guide 5 but to release them when withdrawn. In a modification the rivet is placed by hand or feeding mechanism between spring-pressed jaws 30, Fig. 4. As the stamp 6 comes down a collar 38 strikes levers 37 and withdraws the jaws 30 and the rivet engages the work 3, 4 resting on a spring-supported guide 5 and forces these parts down until the work is arrested by the stationary bolster 16 and the rivet passes through it. The stamp 6 then rises enough to allow.the guide À5 to return to the position shown and a spindle 21 is raised to engage the bolster and form with it a die which heads the rivet when the stamp moves down again. If desired the rivets may be fed, by mechanism not shown, through an opening 43, Fig. 6, to a guide tube 42 having three spring-pressed centring levers 47 and also, if desired, three spring-pressed balls 44.
