RIVETING DEVICE.
v To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEoDonRErs, residing at Cincinnati, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful RivetingDevice, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description, attention being called to thedrawing, which accompanies this application and forms a part thereof.
This invention concerns a device to be used in connection with riveting sheet metal.
-The particular" functions which this device is intended to'perform consistof'posr tioning the rivet; of forcing itthrough the metal and of holding 'a tool, a so called. set, in proper position for forming the head, this being done-by means of a hammer.
, The invention consists of the construction of such a device-as hereinafter described and claimed and as illustrated inrthe accompanying drawing, 111-Wl'1lCl1 Figure-1. shows the device in side elevation'with parts in normal position. that is. at rest. Fig. 2. is a top' view of the same. Fig. 3. is a horizontal section of it on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4. shows the rear end of it; Fig. 5. onenlarged scale shows portions of Fig. 1 with certain operating'parts in alternate positions. Figs. 6 and 7 in similar views show other operating parts in their respective alternate positions.
Letter A indicates a bench or other suitable support upon'which the device is mounted. Y B indicates the frame of the device providedjwith flanges-71 for its attachment.
Numeral 7 indicates the anvil upon which the work is supported and riveted. This anvil may preferably form a part of the frame as shown. Itis provided with a pocket 8 which atithe beginning of anop'eration contains a rivet 9. This set is snugly contained in guide 13 with-a sliding fit, anenlargement or. head 15 being, provided at its upper end which prevents it from droppingout of the. guide. The metal with the inserted rivet is now shifted so that the upturned shank of the rivet is below the lower end of set 14, this latter being slowly lowered thus serving as a pointer to enable the operator to properly position the rivet. The position of the parts which results from this manipulation is shown in Fig. 6 and as to set 11 is due to action on a lever 29 operatively connected to guide 13 which carries said set.

While this is being done, pressure on lever 31 is maintained so as to obtain the action of the lower endof guide 13 as shown in Fig. 7
for the purpose of holding the superposed pieces of sheet-metal in close contact all around the shank of the rivet until the connection of this latter is completed. The action is against a spring 34 which, by bearing against said lever 31, returns these parts to their respective normal positions after the rivet is clenched.
With a view to simplification, lever 29 is mounted upon pivot 18 which also supports lever 17 and to render this possible in a practical manner part of this lever is bent or bail-shaped as best shown in Fig. 2 which permits the two opposite parts of this bailshaped portion to be mounted upon the ends of pivot 18 with guide 13 supported between them. One of theseparts of this bail-shaped portion is continued rearwardly for con nection to link 33.
The rivets may be inserted in pocket 8 from the top, one at the time as needed, or they may be fed in through a slotted passage 35 which is laterally open as shown in Fig. 6. Sheet metal work, where small pieces like handles for instance are connected, involves considerable riveting with use of a limited number of rivets per connection, the rivets being usually equally spaced. The distance between set 14 and die 11 may be arranged to equal this space and if this is done, work of this character may be formed quite expeditiously by means of this device because after the first rivet is placed by the punch, the subsequent positioning of this rivet below the set for forming its head also aids in placing the work in position for receiving the next rivet. Observe Fig. 6.
Having described my invention, I claim as new:
1. In a device of the kind described, the combination of a pivot,a frame in which it is supported, two operating levers mounted on this pivot, a rivet-set connected for operation to one of these levers, a countersunk die connected for operation to the other lever, a punch adapted to co-act' with the die mentioned, an operating lever for it and means to actuate all these levers. I
2. In a device of the kind described, the combination of an anvil for supportingsheet metal'to be riveted, a rivet pocket provided in said anvil, a punch movably supported in this pocket, a countersunk die movably supported opposite the rivet pocket and in axial alinement therewith, means to move this die in contact with the sheet metal while positioned. above the rivet pocket and meansto move the punch toward the die so as to force a rivet into the sheet metal.
3. In a device of the kind described, the combination of a support for the sheet metal, complementary rivet-inserting members consisting of a countersunk die and of a punch adapted to co-act therewith, an actuating lever for each of these members adapted to operate them so that the die is first moved upon the sheet metal from one side'after which the punch is moved against the other side for the purpose of inserting a rivet, a cam whereby these'levers are moved in the manner set forth, and means to actuate this cam.
4.
