Abstract
519,247. Stapling. GOSS FOSTER, Ltd. Oct. 7, 1938, No. 29146. Convention date, Oct. 7, 1937. [Class 89 (iii)] In a rotary stapling mechanism, a stapleforming and driving device is mounted at each end of a cylinder 21 so as to lie within the periphery of the cylinder between its flat end and an attached ring 33. Each device comprises fixed outside formers 25, 31 formed with stapleforming grooves 26, 32 which are slightly non- radial with respect to the axis of the cylinder. The staple wire is forced into the grooves by fingers 86, 87 on a rotary carrier 41 which is so mounted that the fingers project into the space between the formers 25, 31 as the cylinder and carrier rotate. Wire w is fed to guide block 76 and held by a spring 79, and a staple-length is then cut off by cutters 72, 73 on the cylinder and carrier, is carried forward by notches on the fingers 86, 87, and is shaped by being forced into the grooves 26, 32. Its cross-bar is supported by a block 61 pivoted at 66 and connected to a rock-shaft 67. As the cylinder rotates further, the staple is carried off the fingers 86, 87 and on to an arcuate horn 54 which is fixedly mounted concentrically with the cylinder 21. The horn supports and guides it up to the driving position, where it is driven by a short reciprocation of the block 61 and clinched by an anvil 2 on a gathering and folding cylinder 1. The horn has a reduced, upwardly-curved end which extends between the fingers 86, 87 at the staple-forming position, and the block 76 has a tongue 77 extending between the fingers at the wire-feeding position.
